George Fowler (11 May 1868 - 1956) was a Scottish painter and lithographic designer.

Life[edit]

George Fowler was born in Aberdeen on 11 May 1868.

His father was George Fowler (c. 1826 - 11 March 1903), a merchant seaman. His mother was Elizabeth Annand (11 May 1826 - c. 1900). They married on 5 March 1850 in Peterhead.

George Fowler [Jnr.] moves to Edinburgh as a lithographic designer, staying at 6 Upper Grove Place as a lodger. He teams up with first a Archibald and then a Ferrier, for a short time, to run a printing trade design company.[1]

Archibald, Fowler and Ferrier are based at 32 York Place in Edinburgh. In 1898 they advertise for another designer.[2][3]

In the 1901 census George Fowler is staying at 9 Montgomery Street, Edinburgh.[4]

The company becomes Archibald and Fowler again and now advertises photo engraving. They are now based at 29 Elder Street in Edinburgh. [5]

There is a later merger of the Archibald and Fowler company with that of J. Munro Bell and company. The company becomes Bell, Fowler and Company when the new company takes over the shares of J. Munro Bell & Company and that of Archibald & Fowler, photo engravers. The address moves to 47 York Place.[6]

The business of Bell, Fowler and Company goes for sale as a going concern on 2 November 1918. It is handled by the liquidator R. A. Lindsay.[7]

After the First World War Fowler and his family move to Norwich. He becomes a designer for Fletcher & Son Limited, Castle Printing Works, Davey Place, Norwich.[8]
