Arthur Chrystal (20 March 1904 - 26 December 1978) was a Scottish painter and engraver.[1]

Life[edit]

His father was Robert Scott Chrystal (31 May 1871 - 16 April 1911), a printer compositor from Edinburgh. His mother was Janet Wishart (21 May 1871 - 19 February 1948) from Cramond, Midlothian. They married on 31 July 1894 in Edinburgh.

Arthur Chrystal was one of their 9 children. He was born on 20 March 1904 in Edinburgh. He worked for the firm Hislop and Day as an etcher in Edinburgh.[2]

He married Katherine Daisy Edwards (25 May 1912 - 21 March 2005) on 16 April 1938. She was an artist who specialised in weaving.[3]

They had 2 sons. The first Gordon Edward Chrystal (14 April 1947 - 8 January 2014) was born when the family were in Canada. The second William Chrystal (1949 - 1961) died young.

He moved to Canada for work about 1947 and returned to Scotland around 1960.

For many years Arthur had a Fine Art Studio in Montrose.[4]

He died on 26 May 1978 in 2 Dorward Place in Montrose, Angus.[5]
