J. French (21 July 1861 – 18 August 1942) was a Scotland international rugby union player. [1]

Rugby Union career[edit]

Amateur career[edit]

French played rugby union for Glasgow Academicals.[2][3]

In a notable game against West of Scotland in November 1885, French had to play at half-back when David Kidston was injured.[4]

He was noted as a light and clever player. In comparison with William Andrew Walls, the Story of Scottish Rugby stated: "Walls was a big strong useful forward, though he never had the skill of Johnny Brown nor yet of H. T. Ker or J. French, who were too light to owe their success to anything but cleverness."[5]

Provincial career[edit]

He played for Glasgow District in their inter-city match against Edinburgh District in 1885.[6] He scored a try for Glasgow District in their match against North of Scotland District in January 1886.[7]

He played for West of Scotland District in their matches against East of Scotland District in January 1885,[8] January 1886[9] and January 1887.[10]

International career[edit]

French was capped 4 times by Scotland from 1886 to 1887.[11][12]
