The Huron-Wendat Trail is a public trail in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, built around discovered Huron-Wendat archaeological sites. The trail extends from Jane Street, north of Finch Avenue, east to Keele Street along a hydro-electric power-line right-of-way.
Trail description[edit]
The trail is a paved path extending east-west along Hydro Toronto Finch Corridor, a cleared area with high-tension power lines. The segment between Jane Street and Sentinel was designated the Huron-Wendat Trail by Heritage Toronto, an agency of the City of Toronto government. At various points along the trail are stopping points with benches, bicycle racks and memorial plaques explaining some aspect of the site.
Parsons site[edit]
The Parsons site is situated just west of Sentinel Road and Murray Ross Parkway. It is marked by a plaque erected by Toronto Heritage in 2012. It was a large village of 3 hectares (7.4 acres) in size.[1] The village was in operation during the 1500s.[2] It was first examined by University of Toronto students and the Ontario Archaeological Society under the supervision of J. Norman Emerson in 1952.[2] It has been excavated several times: October 1952, October 1953, October/November 1972 and May–September of 1973 by the University of Toronto and in 1989 and 1990 by Archaeological Services Inc. (ASI)[3]
The village had ten longhouses, several sweat lodges and was surrounded by a palisade.[2] Excavations by ASI in 1989 and 1990 revealed 4000 artifacts from the site.[2]
