Alchemy Systems, LP is a private food and workplace safety training technology company. Headquartered in Austin, Texas, Alchemy has 300 customers, including Campbell Foods and Kellogg, and its software trains two million food industry employees. Alchemy also sponsors the annual Global Food Safety Training survey, which included 25,000 international locations in 2014.

Founded in 2003 as Alchemy Training Systems in Austin, Texas, Alchemy created computer based training for food processing and manufacturing companies. It acquired Alchemy Studios, an affiliate, in 2006 and changed its name to Alchemy Systems in May 2007.[1] Riverside Company, a private equity firm, purchased Alchemy in 2013 with the goal of expanding the company into retail and other food industry markets.[2] Alchemy also acquired Catalyst Awareness in 2013 and Chilton Consulting Group, a food safety regulations consulting firm, in 2015.[1]

In 2014 Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), the Canadian government's social program and skills' development department, sponsored 250 low-income students at Fanshawe College and Loyalist College in Ontario to receive food processing training provided by Alchemy and Essential Skills, a job-training program. Branded Elevate Canada: Raising the Grade for Food Processing, the initiative sought to increase Canada's food processing industry by providing job training to unemployed workers.[3]

As of 2013, Alchemy had 300 customers, including international companies such as Campbell Foods and Kellogg.[2] In 2015 its customers included 50 of the top 100 food companies, with two million impacted employees at 10,000 sites, and Alchemy had 160 employees and additional locations in Mexico, Canada, and the United Kingdom. It had $27.9 million in revenue in 2014. Jeff Eastman is the CEO.[4][1]

Global Food Safety Training surveys[edit]

In 2013 Alchemy began partnering with other food safety support organizations to publish annual Global Food Safety Training surveys. The surveys significantly expanded in scope from 2013 to 2014:

The 2013 survey included 649 food and drink manufacturing companies, the majority of which were in North America but included representation from each continent. Survey respondents identified scheduling training time as the greatest barrier to food safety training. The majority of employees received 4-8 hours training per year.[5]

2014[edit]

Alchemy, Campden BRI, BRC Global Standards, the Safe Quality Foods Institute (SQFI) and SGS surveyed more than 25,000 global food manufacturing locations in 2014. Significant findings included that on average employees received less than four hours of annual food safety training and that training records were often incomplete, reducing accountability.[6]

Product and market[edit]

Alchemy provides content and technology for training food production employees, including those in manufacturing, distribution, and retail, as well as operational consulting services. As of 2013, Alchemy’s training library consisted of five hundred courses covering food and workplace safety as well as operations training.[2] It also sells Alchemy Manager, a web-based learning management system that tracks and reports on employee training.[7]
