Francesca Albanese is an Italian international lawyer and author who is the current United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967.

Special Rapporteur[edit]

Francesca Albanese became the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967 on May 1, 2022.[1] She took over the role from the previous mandate-holder, Michael Lynk.

Current Work as Special Rapporteur[edit]

One of the first major events during her tenure as Special Rapporteur was the killing of Shireen Abu Akleh, a Palestinian-American journalist who was shot and killed by the Israeli Defense Forces. Albanese condemned the killing, calling it a "serious violation of international humanitarian law."[2]

Albanese published her first report as rapporteur for the UN Human Rights Council's 50th session.
