William Zeckendorf (June 5, 1842 – November 24, 1906) was a German born-American merchant and politician.

Biography[edit]

Born in Hanover, Germany on June 5, 1842.[1]

educated in Hanover.[2]

Able to speak in English, French, German, and prayerbook Hebrew.[2]

Intended to study theology at the University of Gottingen but lack of funds forced a change in his plans.[1]


Arrived in New York City on November 13, 1856[1]

Left New York to join his brothers, Aaron and Louis, in Sanata Fe, New Mexico Territory six months later.[1]

During the American Civil War, enlisted in the Union Arny and was promoted to lieutenant and assigned as assistant quartermaster for 1st New Mexico regiment.[1]

In addition to service against hostile Indians, fought at the battles of Valverde, Glorieta Pass, and Albuquerque.[1]

Ran for Pima County board of supervisors in 1872[1]

elected to represent Pima county in the Council (upper house) during the 8th Arizona Territorial Legislature.[1]

married Julia Frank in 1875. union produced two daughters and a son.[1]

Was Arizona Pioneers Association's representative at John C. Fremont's funeral[1]

Died in New York City on November 24, 1906.[1]
