Geographical place names

English Wikipedia names all of its articles according to our understanding of the name for the subject in English. In the case of place names, there may be several valid English names, perhaps derived from different languages, or from the same language at different times. These various names, if used by different groups of English speakers, are all valid names for the article.

The choice of a particular name for the article is based entirely on our perceptions of current English usage. In particular, it does not imply support for the territorial claims of any ethnic group that may prefer the name chosen, nor for regarding the language related to this name as the standard language for the region concerned.
