EastEnders is a British soap opera, examining the domestic and professional lives of working class people who live in the fictitious London Borough of Walford in the East End of London. The show entered its 26th broadcasted year on 1 January 2013 with its 4348th episode. It ran for 206 episodes in 2012. They were executively produced by Bryan Kirkwood, until he stepped down from the role in March 2012, and Lorraine Newman took over as acting Executive Producer.[1] Kirkwood's last episode was broadcast on 13 July;[2] Newman's first was the following week, on 16 July.[3] Newman became the full-time Executive Producer on 27 June 2012.[4] The episodes were broadcast on BBC One, apart from the six episode from 30 July until 9 August, which were shown on BBC Two due to the 2012 Summer Olympics being broadcast on BBC One. They are all 30 minutes in length, apart from four one-hour episodes, one of 35 minutes, one of 40 minutes and one of 70 minutes. There were also three shorter episodes shown on BBC Online and BBC Red Button. The highest rated episode was on 25 December. The one-hour Christmas Day episode received ratings of 11.31 million viewers. The lowest-rated episode was on 15 November 2012, with viewers numbering 5.53 million.

Storylines that ran throughout 2012 include Derek Branning (Jamie Foreman) being revealed as the culprit who has been having an affair with Kat Moon (Jessie Wallace), Ben Mitchell (Joshua Pascoe) murdering Heather Trott (Cheryl Fergison) and convincing his father Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) and adoptive half-brother Jay Mitchell (Jamie Borthwick) to help cover up the crime, Tanya Jessop (Jo Joyner) discovering that her mother Cora Cross (Ann Mitchell) had another daughter Ava Hartman (Clare Perkins), Michael Moon (Steve John Shepherd) conning Jean Slater (Gillian Wright) out of all her money and lying that her bipolar disorder is intensifying, Max Branning (Jake Wood) being revealed to have another wife Kirsty Branning (Kierston Wareing), Ian Beale's (Adam Woodyatt) mental breakdown and homelessness, Lauren Branning's (Jacqueline Jossa) relationship with her cousin Joey Branning (David Witts), Derek's feuds with many of the locals, Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) and Roxy Mitchell's (Rita Simons) custody battle for their daughter Amy Mitchell, Pat Evans' (Pam St. Clement) death from pancreatic cancer on New Year's Day, Sharon Rickman's (Letitia Dean) dramatic return to Walford, Roxy developing feelings for the local landlord Alfie Moon (Shane Richie), Lola Pearce (Danielle Harold) losing custody of her baby daughter Lexi after assaulting Alexa Smith (Saffron Coomber), Janine Butcher (Charlie Brooks) giving birth prematurely to her baby daughter Scarlett and developing paranoia and Derek's death from a heart attack on Christmas Day.

Characters that were introduced during 2012 were Les Coker (Roger Sloman), Ray Dixon (Chucky Venn), Alice Branning (Jasmyn Banks), Joey Branning (David Witts), AJ Ahmed (Phaldut Sharma), Dennis Rickman Jnr (Harry Hickles), Trish Barnes (Tessa Churchard), Danny Pennant (Gary Lucy), Alexa Smith (Saffron Coomber), Ava Hartman (Clare Perkins), Ayesha Rana (Shivani Ghai) and Kirsty Branning (Kierston Wareing). Bradley Freegard, Jesse Birdsall, Juliet Cowan, Daisy Wood-Davis and Frances Lima all guest starred throughout the year as Gethin Williams, John Hewland, Nina Hewland, Tansy Meadow and Jackie Bosch. Cast returning on a regular basis in the year were Letitia Dean as Sharon Rickman and Rachel Bright as Poppy Meadow, with Lucy Beale and Lorraine Stevens returning played by new actresses, Hetti Bywater and Victoria Alcock. Kellie Shirley, Sophie Lawrence, Michael French and Nick Berry all made guest returns as Carly Wicks, Diane Butcher, David Wicks and Simon Wicks. Characters that departed the soap in 2012 were Pat Evans (Pam St. Clement), Norman Simmonds (George Layton), Jane Beale (Laurie Brett), Heather Trott (Cheryl Fergison), Lorraine Stevens (Victoria Alcock), Mandy Salter (Nicola Stapleton), Afia Masood (Meryl Fernandes), Ricky Butcher (Sid Owen), Rose Cotton (Polly Perkins), Ben Mitchell (Joshua Pascoe), Andrew Cotton (Ricky Grover), Anthony Moon (Matt Lapinskas), Amira Masood (Preeya Kalidas), Syed Masood (Marc Elliott), Christian Clarke (John Partridge) and Derek Branning (Jamie Foreman). The first half of the year encompasses departures for Pat Evans (Pam St. Clement), Jane Beale (Laurie Brett), Heather Trott (Cheryl Fergison), Mandy Salter (Nicola Stapleton), and Afia Masood (Meryl Fernandes).[5][6][7][8][9] Sid Owen (who played Ricky Butcher) departed from the show in January, but made a guest return in June for the wedding of his sister Janine (Charlie Brooks).[10] Polly Perkins and Ricky Grover both left the show as mother and son, Rose and Andrew Cotton, with Perkins' exit airing in July and Grover's exit airing in August.[11][12] Joshua Pascoe decided to leave his role of Ben Mitchell in a storyline which would the truth of Heather's murder revealed.[13] Matt Lapinskas was axed from the cast in 2012 and it was announced on 9 May 2012 that his character, Anthony Moon, would be leaving the show in scenes which would see him make "a big mistake".[14] Preeya Kalidas made her exit from the show as Amira Masood in March.[15] Marc Elliott chose to leave his role of Syed Masood and his on-screen partner John Partridge (who played Christian Clarke from 2008) was subsequently axed from the show. Both departures were announced on 7 September 2012.[16] Four days later, it was announced that Kalidas would return for the exits of Elliott and Partridge.[17] Amira returned for three episodes between 6 and 12 November, with the exits of Syed and Christian airing on 15 November. In October 2012, an exit for Derek Branning (Jamie Foreman) was announced and he was killed-off in December.[18] Patsy Palmer, Lindsey Coulson, James Forde, Maisie Smith and Devon Higgs were all announced to be taking a six-month break from their roles as Bianca Butcher, Carol Jackson, Liam Butcher, Tiffany Butcher and Morgan Butcher in April, with Coulson, Forde, Smith and Higgs returning on-screen in October and Palmer returning on-screen in November.[19] Charlie Brooks was announced to be taking a six-month break in February, with her character Janine Butcher leaving in September.[20] Linda Henry, who plays Shirley Carter, took a break from the show in September 2012, returning in December.[21]

Michael French returned to his role as David Wicks for a guest stint to coincide with the exit of St. Clement, whilst Nick Berry guest appeared, unannounced, for a single episode, also to conincide with St. Clement's exit.[22][23] Inside Soap reported in December 2011 that Sophie Stanton would be reprising his role of Jill Marsden on 5 January.[24] Chucky Venn was introduced as the biological father of Morgan Butcher (Devon Higgs), Ray Dixon in January.[25] The role of Lucy Beale, who left the series in 2010, was recast to Hetti Bywater in January.[26] Lorraine Stevens, who previously guest appeared in the show in 1991 and 1992, was reintroduced, with the role now cast to Victoria Alcock.[27] The children of Derek Branning (Jamie Foreman), Alice and Joey (portrayed by Jasmyn Banks and David Witts respectively) were introduced in May and June.[28][29] Sophie Lawrence made a guest return to the cast in June as Diane Butcher, following a four year absence.[30] The return of Poppy Meadow (Rachel Bright) was announced on 18 July 2012, for her third guest since her introduction in 2011.[31] Bright was promoted to a regular role in October, with Poppy said to remain on the show for "the forseeable future".[32] The role of Masood Ahmed's (Nitin Ganatra) brother, AJ Ahmed was cast to Phaldut Sharma in July.[33] In February 2012, it was announced that Letitia Dean would reprise her role of original character, Sharon Rickman and her son, Dennis Rickman Jnr was introduced following her return in August, portrayed by child actor Harry Hickles.[34][35] Kellie Shirley was confirmed to return for a "short, dramatic storyline" as Carly Wicks, where she returned for two episodes in September.[36] Tessa Churchard was cast as Lola Pearce's (Danielle Harold) solicitor, Trish Barnes, a new recurring character for the show,[37] whilst Saffron Coomber was cast as Lola's former friend, Alexa Smith.[38] Both played significant roles in the storyline which saw Lola's daughter Lexi taken away from her by social services. Gary Lucy's casting in the role of banker Danny Pennant was announced in August 2012, with the actor on a three-month guest contract.[39][40] The character was involved in a love triangle between Syed Masood and Christian Clarke.[40] A new storyline began in September 2012 when it was revealed that Cora Cross (Ann Mitchell) had given birth to a baby in the 1960s, but gave it up for adoption. Clare Perkins was subsequently cast as Ava Hartman, the child that Cora had abandoned.[41] Shivani Ghai was introduced as a family friend of the Masood family, Ayesha Rana in December.[42] A storyline that ran throughout the year was Max Branning's secret, which was exposed on Christmas Day 2012 as it was revealed that he was married to Kirsty Branning (Kierston Wareing). Wareing had been cast in the role in August.[43]

In the typical week, EastEnders airs four half-hour episodes in a time slot of 8.00 pm on Mondays and Fridays, and 7.30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The episodes were broadcast on BBC One, apart from the six episodes airing between 30 July and 9 August, which were shown on BBC Two due to the 2012 Summer Olympics being broadcast on BBC One. Each episode was repeated the same evening on BBC Three, with a weekly omnibus edition airing on Sundays until 6 April when it was moved to a late night Friday/early Saturday morning slot.[44][45] There were also three shorter episodes shown on BBC Online and BBC Red Button.

Until episodes broadcast in July, each episode was executively produced by Bryan Kirkwood, whose decision to resign from the position after two years was announced on 12 March 2012.[1] Lorraine Newman was announced as his temporary replacement until a permanent replacement could be found.[1] Kirkwood's final credited episode was broadcast on 13 July,[2] with Newman's first credited episode broadcast on 16 July.[3] Newman was announced as the permanent executive producer on 27 June 2012, with immediate effect, commenting that is "an absolute honour" to be the show's executive producer.[4]

Official ratings are taken from the Broadcasters' Audience Research Board (BARB).[46] Airdates, credits and running times are taken from the official EastEnders website.[47] Episode numbers are taken from Radio Times.[48]

Pat's health rapidly deteriorates as New Year's Day arrives. Ricky and Bianca try their best to keep the news that Pat is dying from Liam, Tiffany and Morgan. She receives many visitors, including Ian, Dot, Max and Tanya, but she is most anticipating a visit from her son, David. Derek makes an unwelcome appearance, and cruelly taunts Pat about dying, however he is thrown out by a furious Max and Tanya. Janine soon arrives and initially refuses to believe that Pat is dying, but when she realises that it is true, she confides in Pat that she is pregnant, with Pat convincing her to keep the baby and the pair put their past differences behind them. Eventually, David arrives, and after visiting Pat, decides it is too much and prepares to leave. However, David soon finds himself in a fight with Derek, which prompts him to return to his dying mother. He finds Ian frantically phoning an ambulance, and so David dashes upstairs to find Ricky, Bianca, Janine and Carol gathered around Pat's bed as she chokes on her last breaths. Pat expresses her fears about dying to David, who attempts to reassure her, however Pat peacefully passes away in his arms. Elsewhere, Mandy tells Ian that she slept with Ricky, Whitney and Tyler share a kiss, and Tanya panics about cancer after visiting Pat.

Broadcast on Sunday at 7.00 pm as an extra episode for New Year's Day.[49] Pat Evans departs and David Wicks returns. This episode saw a revamp of the opening titles that included the Olympic Park.[50]

It is the day of Pat's funeral, and emotions are running high as David and Carol prepare to depart Walford following the service. Derek threatens David, ordering him to leave Walford without Carol. Derek gets Jack, Max and Michael involved in driving David out of Walford, and as Derek pulls a knife on him, Max and Jack order David to flee while they restrain Derek. Amidst this, Ian informs Bianca that Ricky had a baby with Mandy, resulting in Bianca ending her marriage to Ricky. Derek then storms over to Carol, and when unpacking her bags, he hits her across the face. Max and Jack advise David to leave Walford in order to escape Derek, which he does before Carol arrives to join him. Elsewhere, Lauren is in trouble with Max and Tanya when she is spotted vomiting behind a gravestone.

The episode is dedicated to Pam St. Clement after playing Pat Evans for over 25 years. David Wicks departs and Simon Wicks returns for a single episode.

Heather is thrilled when Andrew proposes to her.

Lucy suggests that Andrew and Heather have their wedding day the same day as Ian and Mandy, while Whitney is cross to see Jack and Roxy arguing in front of Amy.

Billy's next stop is Wembley Stadium and again he discovers the torch bearers have already left. Billy then goes to West Ham United F.C. and catches up with the other torch bearers but unfortunately Billy has lost his pass and is not allowed in. His taxi driver, Hercules, appears with Billy's pass and he takes part in the celebrations. Billy then wakes up in the hair and beauty salon in Walford and it turns out he was dreaming.
