EastEnders is a British soap opera, examining the domestic and professional lives of working class people who live in the fictitious London Borough of Walford in the East End of London. The show airs on BBC One and entered its 29th broadcasted year on 1 January 2014 with its 4775th episode, with Dominic Treadwell-Collins continuing his role as executive producer for his first full year in the running. In 2014, EastEnders ran for 209 episodes. On the typical week, EastEnders airs four half-hour episodes across each weekday except Wednesday, in a time slot of 8.00 pm on Mondays and Fridays, and an earlier time of 7:30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Five episodes in July that were broadcast on BBC Two due to coverage of the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Storylines included the murder of Carl White (Daniel Coonan) who was killed by Ronnie Mitchell (Samantha Womack), Johnny Carter (Sam Strike) coming out as gay, Cindy Williams' (Mimi Keene) teenage pregnancy, Carol Jackson's (Lindsey Coulson) breast cancer, Charlie and Nick Cotton's (Declan Bennett and John Altman) plot to fake Nick's death, the murder of Lucy Beale (Hetti Bywater), Shirley Carter (Linda Henry) being revealed as Mick Carter's (Danny Dyer) mother, Stan Carter (Timothy West) and Cora Cross' (Ann Mitchell) relationship, Sharon Mitchell's (Letitia Dean) plot to take down her husband Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden), Aleks Shirovs' (Kristian Kiehling) secret family, Patrick Trueman's (Rudolph Walker) stroke, Alfie Moon's (Shane Richie) arson, Tosh Mackintosh's (Rebecca Scroggs) domestic abuse of Tina Carter (Luisa Bradshaw-White), and Linda Carter's (Kellie Bright) rape at the hands of Dean Wicks (Matt Di Angelo).

Characters that were introduced in 2014 included Nancy Carter (Maddy Hill), Aleks Shirovs, Stan Carter, Babe Smith (Annette Badland), Tosh Mackintosh, Charlie Cotton, Lee Carter (Danny-Boy Hatchard), Donna Yates (Lisa Hammond), Pam Coker (Lin Blakley), Emma Summerhayes (Anna Acton), Cameron Bryant (Glen Wallace), Yvonne Cotton (Pauline McLynn), Ineta Shirovs (Octavia Alexandru; Gledisa Osmani), Elaine Peacock (Maria Friedman), Kush Kazemi (Davood Ghadami), Andrew "Buster" Briggs (Karl Howman), and Sylvie Carter (Linda Marlowe). Cast returning for a guest stint included Emma Barton as Honey Mitchell, Belinda Owusu as Libby Fox, John Partridge as Christian Clarke, Nicola Cowper as Gina Williams, seven years since her last appearance, Tanya Franks as Rainie Cross, Nicholas Bailey as Anthony Trueman, who appeared regularly between 2000 and 2003, Neil McDermott as Ryan Malloy, and Gillian Wright and Tony O'Callaghan as Jean Slater and Ollie Walters, less than a year since their exit. Characters that returned in 2014 with new actors were Shabnam Masood, now played by Rakhee Thakrar, Rebecca Fowler, now played by Jasmine Armfield, Lily Branning, now played by Aine Garvey, Ben Mitchell, now played by Harry Reid, and Martin Fowler, now played by James Bye. Amy Mitchell, Bobby Beale and Ineta Shirovs were recast during the year to Abbie Knowles, Elliot Carrington and Gledisa Osmani respectively. Maddy Hill,[1] Timothy West, Annette Badland,[2] Danny-Boy Hatchard,[3] Rebecca Scroggs,[4] Maria Friedman,[5] Linda Marlowe[6] and Karl Howman[7] joined the cast in 2014 as members of the Carter family: Nancy Carter, Stan Carter, Babe Smith, Lee Carter, Tosh Mackintosh, Elaine Peacock, Sylvie Carter and Andrew "Buster" Briggs. Stan's grandson, Dean Wicks (Matt Di Angelo), who previously appeared in the show between 2006 and 2008, returned to the show on 11 April 2014.[8] The first half of year featured the returns of Jane Beale (Laurie Brett),[9][10] Shabnam Masood (now played by Rakhee Thakrar),[11] Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy) and her daughter Rebecca (now played by Jasmine Armfield),[12][13] Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner) and her daughter Lily Branning (now played by Aine Garvey),[14][15] Les Coker (Roger Sloman)[16] and Honey Mitchell (Emma Barton)[17] as well as DI Samantha Keeble (Alison Newman), Libby Fox (Belinda Owusu), Christian Clarke (John Partridge), Gina Williams (Nicola Cowper) and Rainie Cross (Tanya Franks) who returned for the 'Who Killed Lucy Beale?' storyline.[18][19][20] Nicholas Bailey and Neil McDermott made surprise one episode returns as Anthony Trueman and Ryan Malloy in July and September.[21][22] In August, Gillian Wright and Tony O'Callaghan reprised their roles as Jean Slater and Ollie Walters for a week of "Slater-central episodes".[23] Ben Mitchell returned on 22 September 2014, with the role recast to Harry Reid.[24] Barbara Windsor, who played Peggy Mitchell, returned for a cameo appearance on 25 September 2014.[25] Original bad boy, Nick Cotton (John Altman), returned to the show on 24 October 2014 following his supposed death months earlier.[26] Martin Fowler, who was originally appeared between 1985 and 2007, returned on 5 December, now played by James Bye.[27] Kristian Kiehling joined the cast as new Latvian market inspector, Aleks Shirovs on 24 January 2014.[28] As part of Stacey Branning's return, Busted singer, Matt Willis was announced to be appearing as Stacey's boyfriend, Luke Riley, and he appeared in February.[29] Declan Bennett joined the cast as Charlie Cotton, the grandson of Dot Branning (June Brown), on 10 March 2014.[30] In March 2014, Lisa Hammond was announced to play the show's second disabled character, Donna Yates and the following month, Lin Blakley was announced to be playing Pam Coker, the wife to Les Coker. They joined the show on 14 April 2014.[31][16] Emma Summerhayes and Cameron Bryant (Anna Acton and Glen Wallace) were introduced on 21 April 2014 as detectives involved in the 'Who Killed Lucy Beale?' storyline.[32] Former Father Ted star, Pauline McLynn began appearing as Charlie's mother, Yvonne Cotton from 12 May 2014[33] and Davood Ghadami debuted as market trader, Kush Kazemi on 20 October 2014.[34]

The first half of the year encompasses departures for Carl White (Daniel Coonan), Kirsty Branning (Kierston Wareing), AJ Ahmed (Phaldut Sharma), Sadie Young (Kate Magowan), Poppy Meadow (Rachel Bright), Danny Pennant (Gary Lucy), Lucy Beale (Hetti Bywater) and Jake Stone (Jamie Lomas), who were all written out of the show.[35][36][37][38][39] Charlie Brooks, who has played Janine Butcher on-off since 1999, quit in mid-2013 and she left the show on 20 March 2014 after being found not-guilty of murder.[40][41] Michael French left his role of David Wicks in May 2014, eight months after his return.[42] The show announced in April 2014 that Patsy Palmer had left her role as Bianca Jackson.[43] Subsequently, Terry Spraggan (Terry Alderton), Tiffany Butcher (Maisie Smith), Morgan Butcher (Devon Higgs), TJ Spraggan (George Sargeant), and Rosie Spraggan (Jerzey Swingler) were written out of the show to accommodate Bianca's exit, making their final appearance in September 2014.[44][45] Tosh Mackintosh departed in December 2014 at the end of her domestic abuse storyline.[4] Sam Strike quit his role of Johnny Carter during the year and left on 25 December 2014, less than a year after he joined the show.[46] Three characters were recast during the year: Amy Mitchell, who had been played by Amelie Conway since 2010, was recast to Abbie Knowles in March 2014;[47] Bobby Beale, who had been recast to Rory Stroud in March 2013, changed actors in November 2014 when Elliot Carrington began the role; Ineta Shirovs, who was played by Octavia Alexandru in a cameo appearance, was recast to Gledisa Osmani when Ineta permanently arrived in September 2014.

In the typical week, EastEnders airs four half-hour episodes in a time slot of 8.00 pm on Mondays and Fridays, and 7.30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The episodes were broadcast on BBC One, apart from the six episodes airing between 24 and 31 July, which were shown on BBC Two due to the 2014 Commonwealth Games being broadcast on BBC One. Each episode was repeated the same evening on BBC Three, with a weekly omnibus edition airing on Sundays. Every episode was executively produced by Dominic Treadwell-Collins following his appointment in August 2013.[48]

The new year saw the arrival of Nancy Carter, played by Maddy Hill, and the murder of Carl White (Daniel Coonan) by Ronnie Mitchell (Samantha Womack). Nancy is the daughter of Mick Carter (Danny Dyer) and Linda Carter (Kellie Bright).[1] Mick's grandfather Stan Carter, played by Timothy West, and maternal great aunt Babe Smith, played by Annette Badland, were introduced in January.[2]

Ronnie, having knocked Carl unconscious the night before, asks for Phil's help in moving the body. They find him awaken and he promises to leave Walford, but instead returns and tries to rape Ronnie. In an act of self-defence, Ronnie slams the car boot lid onto Carl, killing him and subsequently, has the car crushed. Ronnie, Roxy and Amy then leave for Ibiza while Phil discovers Carl's bloodied phone. Meanwhile, Mick, Linda and Johnny attend Nancy's wedding to Wayne, but Mick disapproves so carries Nancy away from the ceremony and they take her back to Walford. Elsewhere, Tina turns down Billy's advances, Alfie secures a pitch on the market and Denise is left mortified when Masood reveals she told him she was going to leave Ian whilst drunk.

This episode was broadcast on Wednesday at 8.00 pm an extra episode for New Year's Day.[52]
