Isolation of the 220VDC batteries at Callide C4 when the unit is in service

In a thermal power station, the Castell key interlocking system plays a critical role in ensuring safety and preventing accidents.

This is why it’s so crucial:

  1. Isolation and Safety:
    • Trapped key interlocks are mechanical or electro-mechanical devices used to ensure the safe operation of plant equipment.
    • When it comes to isolators (disconnect switches), the Castell system ensures that they are properly isolated before any maintenance or intervention.
    • By interlocking the isolators using a Castell key system, personnel are prevented from inadvertently closing or opening them while the unit is in service.
    • This isolates the equipment from the power source, reducing the risk of electric shock, arc flash, or other accidents.
    • If Callide C4 220 VDC system had been fitted with a Castell Key System to ensure that the key required to unlock the isolator was only available once the unit breaker was open not connected to the grid. The C4 alternator would not been destroyed at vast cost.
