From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The National Capital Region (NCR) is more commonly referred to as Metropolitan Manila (Filipino: Kalakhang Maynila, Kamaynilaan) and is located at the center of Luzon, the largest and most populous island in the Philippines. It is the country's premiere urban region since it is considered to be the political, economic, social, and cultural center of the Philippines [1] [2]

It does not contain any provinces but instead is composed of sixteen cities and one municipality. The following cities are Muntinlupa, Caloocan, Las Pinas, Makati, Malabon, Mandaluyong, Marikina, Navotas, Pasay, Pasig, Paranaque, Quezon City, San Juan, Taguig, Valenzuela and finally the City of Manila itself while the lone municipality is named Pateros. Each city has its own unique etymology which adheres to each city's vast history. [3] [4]

Boundaries

Metropolitan Manila shares borders with only two other regions, Central Luzon Region which is also known as Region 3 and Calabarzon Region which is also known as Region 4a. To the north, Metropolitan Manila is bordered by the province Bulacan located in Region 3 while to the south it is bordered by the province Laguna located in Region 4a and to the south-west it is bordered by the province Cavite, also located in Region 4a. To the east, Metropolitan Manila is bordered by a body of water, Laguna de Bay while to the west it is bordered by another body of water, Manila Bay. These two bays are joined by the Pasig River. Brief History

Settlement in Manila goes back around 1000 years ago. Tondo people occupied the land and by 15th century Muslim trade is flourishing. Towns were once governed by Brunei Sultanate and for short time, around 14th century, it became a province of Hindu Indonsian Majapahit Empire.

Due to a lot of dynasties that ruled NCR, Spanish colonists was easily able to form a plan on how to divide and conquer the land. Earliest records suggest that the name of the area might have come from a local dialect, with 'may nila' meaning 'there is a nila tree over there'.

During the Spanish colony, the Philippines became a settlement of Mexico, colony of Spain, and was named after King Philip II. Manila became an important part of maritime trade for Chinese porcelains and other goods across Mexico, Pacific and Europe. Also a lot of spices are exported to different part of Europe. [7]
