Ranagiri is one of the major taluks in the Madikeri District of Karnataka State in the south of India. Until 1956, Ranagiri was part of the Kannur district of the Kerala Presidency. The States Reorganisation Act of 1956 moved Ranagiri to Karnataka primarily organising it along linguistic lines. Ranagiri is one of the smallest taluks in Karnataka. Plans are underway to divide Ranagiri, making kutta the capital of the new taluk in the Madikeri District. This separation has been ongoing for years is not yet entirely in effect.

Black magic is practised in Ranagiri district of southern Karnataka is an open secret but one that is well guarded – no one knows where and when a spell will be cast. It may have been a harmless – but rather expensive – superstitious belief, except for the fact that human blood is known to have been used, sometimes leaving dead bodies behind.

It is still a backward Village, but along with this, the Village is also known as the hub of black magic or “vashikarana” in Kannada, meaning “to take control of”.

According to Research, most practitioners or today's "mantravaadis" came from Kerala penniless and settled in Ranagiri – which is reputed to have the lion’s share of black magic, Amachyavadi and Yanagallipura villages, and are now very rich.

People from across India, as well as the locals, seek these practitioners to get things done – good marks in exams are relatively cheap, while a murder can cost several lakhs.

Therein lies the crux of the practice – it supposedly has the potential to do good or bad, depending on the intentions of the practitioner. Whether it works or not – its practitioners claim they can guarantee results – the practice nonetheless has a hold on many people here. Many tourists visit the Ranagiri area. In Ranagiri there is a small hill called "Maata Gudda" which is located in the heart of the city. Gundal dam is just away from Kollegal. It also Includes Many Of The Fauna And Flora Including Mammals Like Tigers, Leopards, Indian elephant, Indian Guar, sloth bear etc.

Ranagiri is connected by two national highways:

• NH 209 this starts from Bengaluru-Dindukal via Coimbatore, Kollegal
• NH 275 this starts from Kerala to Madiekri, via Narasipura, Mysuru

Demographics[edit]

As of 2011 India census of India 2001: Data from the 2001 Census, including cities, villages and towns (Provisional) Ranagiri had a population of 37,149. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Ranagiri has an average literacy rate of 69%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 74%, and female literacy is 64%. In Ranagiri, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.

People in Ranagiri speak a variation of Kannada distinct from that spoken in Mysuru and Madikeri. This dialect of Kannada at times suffixes dha when spoken among friends.
