The Infant K case was a court case in 1984, centering around the hysterectomy of a 10 year old British Columbia girl with tuberous sclerosis.

Background[edit]

Infant K was born to a couple in British Columbia. She was later diagnosed with tuberous sclerosis.

Sterilization[edit]

The operation was performed in secret, prior to the decision. The parents feared her reaction to menarche, as she had a phobic reaction to blood.[1]

The issue was whether her parents could properly consent to the operation. The trial judge concluded that the parents could not. The case was reversed on appeal, on the basis that the purpose of the operation was to protect Infant K from herself.[2]
