Student outcomes[edit]
Most of the students benefited greatly from the program. Douglas returned to a regular school. Some of the students like Jonathan stayed on to continue their progress.
Kevin disappeared from the program entirely. His family packed their bags and left town in a hurry. His father was arrested as a suspect in a string of robberies. Kevin and his mother were last heard of in California.
Edward derived next to no benefit from the program. He was placed in a state institution, Green Valley Center. A private facility, Kirby School, was considered, but rejected.

The book also won several awards and was bought for a movie.
