Trial adminship is a process by which prospective administrators with moderate to strong community support can gain the administrator tools early to allow development of understanding of how Wikipedia policy applies to different situations they may encounter as an administrator. Trial adminship is granted by bureaucrats when there is a large amount of support at RfA (at least 60%) with no serious objections to help with the development of consensus. Trial administrators are subject to mentorship and the maintenance of the rights relies on community consensus.
Mentors[edit]
Trial administrators can be mentored by at least three active administrators, of which one administrator must be a bureaucrat. Mentorship is a commitment to helping the editor develop good judgement regarding the tools. To prevent conflict of interest, the nominators of the RfA cannot participate in mentorship for their nominee, and bureaucrats engaging in mentorship cannot close their associated RfA.
Expectations of mentors[edit]
- Respond promptly to feedback and complaints about their trial admin candidate;
- Revert trial administrator actions that are not within policy or potentially contentious;
- Provide personal guidance to trial administrators as to how to improve on their talk page;
- Assess the trial administrator's use of the tools at RfA.

- Incorporate feedback from mentors into their future decisions;
- Ask mentors for guidance on appropriate use on administrator tools;
- Avoid serious violations of policies and guidelines;
- Avoid any behavior that would result in the involuntary removal of administrator tools by the community or the Arbitration Committee.
Trial adminship length[edit]
Trial adminship is granted by a bureaucrat at least 72 hours after the start of an RfA. The trial lasts for as long as the RfA, which can be extended past the 7 day period for up to three months, depending on the finding of community consensus by bureaucrats.
- If consensus at RfA rises to at least 80% support during the trial, then the trial can end as early as seven days from the start of the RfA (for a total of four days of trial adminship), with a promotion to full adminship.
- If consensus at RfA falls to 50% or below, or there is otherwise reason for a bureaucrat to close the associated RfA as not successful, then the trial ends with the loss of the administrator tools.
- If mentors withdraw or lose their adminship, and other admins are not willing to mentor the candidate, then the trial ends with the loss of the administrator tools.
- After three months, if there is still not consensus for or against the administrator tools, then the tools are removed and the RfA is closed as "no consensus".
Reversion of trial administrators[edit]
Reversion of trial administrators by their mentors is exempt from the policy on wheel-warring. However, the normal edit warring policies still hold when the trial administrator acts in a non-administrative capacity. Reversion of trial administrators that are unambiguously against policy is also exempt from the policy on wheel-warring.
