The Sapper Adventure Foundation (SAF) under the Indian Army Corps of Engineers is the apex body for the planning, conduct, coordination and promotion of adventure activities in the Corps.

The SAF provides an umbrella for the personnel of the Corps to undertake activities in multifarious disciplines. These comprise competitive sports which may require additional resources from those available through official channels or these could be adventure activities possessing high-risk content. These cover all the three dimensions of land, sea or air.

Motivation[edit]

Many officers and soldiers will tell you that Sports and Adventure are one of the highlights of serving with the Indian Army. It is an important part of Army life. Not only does it build practical skills, but it's also great for improving teamwork and decision-making. It's hard work, rewarding and it's fun.

Adventure activities provide the means to develop necessary individual and leadership skills within a controlled risk environment. It is recognised not only by the Armed Forces but also in the civilian world with the mushrooming of numerous disciplines and opportunities where a common man can participate. It is known to enhance operational capability by enhancing the physical and mental robustness of Service Personnel.

It is also recognised that Sports and Adventure contribute to recruiting, operational stress management, personal development and retention, all of which serve to ensure an enduring military covenant throughout the careers of Service personnel.

It can be organised as a group activity through the unit; it can also be organised individually joining other members of the Corps. Larger activities can be planned with the other Arms and Services of the Indian Army and the other two services. With specific permission, civil experts in various fields can also be co-opted with the expeditions.

Competitive Sports[edit]

These include sports which are held under the purview of the Olympic Games, World Championships, Asian Games or other Federations recognised by the Ministry of Sports, Government of India. These include sailing (sport), rowing etc.

Adventure Activities[edit]

There are many sports classified as adventure sports, due to their inherent danger and excitement. Some of these include mountain climbing, offshore sailing, gliding, hang gliding, skydiving, car rally or other extreme sports.
