EARLY YEARS[edit]

In the early years of Roland's Existence, it remained at the palm of greater powers surrounding it until in around 1407 AD, King Phillip XIII invaded Flanders. This invasion gave Rolands a foothold in the Benelux region and was able to fight off larger powers as it slowly gained territory, conquering the Rhine and all of Benelux by 1609.

COLONIZATION[edit]

In the early 1700s, expeditions from explorers hired mainly from Iberia were sent out from Roland to the Americas. They got a small foothold on a few Carribean islands and made massive profits off of selling sugar to countries in Europe.

INDUSTRIALIZATION[edit]

Roland was quite late to industrialization in the 1800s due to being split by industrialists in the northern region of their territory, and traditionalists who were against the mass industrialization of farmland centuries old. This tension culminated in the Civil War from 1855 to 1862, where the industrialists won.

WORLD WAR ONE[edit]

Roland was a major player in world war one, taking over all of France and Germany, and clashing with their largest rival, the Federation of Grand Khranos in the Balkans. They eventually lost most of their territory in Germany by 1917, and a civil war in Khranos ended the war 1918.

WORLD WAR TWO[edit]

Roland remained neutral throughout World War 2 until they were invaded by the fascist government of Khranos in 1941, a 'Great War' ensued, where almost 24 million died in total.

AFTER WORLD WAR 2, 50s[edit]

After the war, Roland and other powers around the world set out to establish a democratic world order to keep the world from going to war for a 2nd time. Repeated border skirmishes and naval battles continued with Khranos throughout the 50s, and Khranos and Roland tested their first hydrogen bomb in 1952. In the late 50s, Khranos gained a massive leap over Roland by testing and constructing their first Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile, and began mass production in 1959. This created the new 'Interceptor' Class, which was invented to intercept long-range missiles and nuclear bombers.

ROLAND-KHRANOS COLD WAR[edit]

Through the 60s and 80s, constant false alarms and proxy wars dragged the powers into conflict briefly, but nuclear weapons were never utilize luckily. Multiple nuclear arms treaties were signed during the 70s, limited the number of ICBMs for each country. Each country attempted to gain an edge over the other throughout this time, which led to things such as the internet, micro-processors, long-range radar, supersonic aircraft, and many more.

1971 JUTLAND INCIDENT[edit]

On the night of June 25th, 1971, the Roland nuclear submarine Lucius detected something nearby in the water. They radioed back to their carrier group, which ordered them to hold fire unless attack was imminent. The eager Lieutenant on board, Luke Fredrickson flipped his switch to begin the activation process to launch a torpedo. Meanwhile in Khranos, the premier was informed of a nuclear submarine near Jutland. They also radioed to their carrier group and were ordered to attack. One officer on each submarine chose not to flip their switch, preventing nuclear annihilation of both sides. At the same time, the entire encounter was televised for the public to see, making it known by both sides as soon as it concluded.

LAB TRIALS OF 1971[edit]

The LAB trials (Land Air Battle) was a massive military project to modernize the aging military of Rolandia entering the 70s. The year-long trial saw more than 100+ vehicles spanning all branches of the military, and very few made past the trials and into use. The Khranos made massive technological leaps during the later years of the 60s, throwing Rolandia behind, leaving them vulnerable to attack. This urged the military government at the time to begin large trials to rapidly modernize the military in a short amount of time to catch-up with Khranos.

BROKEN ARROW INCIDENTS[edit]

A broken arrow incident is where a nuclear weapon was lost inside or outside of Roland borders. all broken arrow incidents haven't been major events or have had detonations, but they are still relevant throughout the military. June 1953- Bomber collision over Spain, weapon landed in field. May 1954- Bomber crew passes out for unknown reasons, plane crashes into the Bay of Biscay. July 1954- Bomber crew is shot down by anti-air, nuclear weapon lands in field nearby Okhsavn, mass evacuation ensued. December 1954- Bomber crew collided mid-air, both bombs landed in Britain. February 1956- Bomber ran out of fuel, landed in field, activated but not detonated. April 1957- Test Cruise missile accidently launched over southern France, crashes into field after running out of fuel. April 1964- ICBM rangefinder is wired, crashes into Atlantic ocean. November 1970- ICBM rangefinder wired, crashes into Bay of Biscay. December 1970-ICBM rangefinder wired, crashes into northern Atlantic.

AIRFORCE AND NAVY'S HISTORICAL RIVALRY[edit]

Throughout Rolandia history, the airforce have been divided throughout the world wars, and continuing into the cold war. during their years of the carrier and great wars, they were agreeance that simple bi-plane aircraft that could escort bombers and fighter other aircraft, a multi-role if you will. But after all this and the rivalry and cold war with Khranos, the divide began. The navy wanted high-altitude bomber intercepting fighters, and the airforce demanded simply air superiority fighters against Khranos' experienced jet pilots. Multiple large companies at the time such as RV (Rolandskvadet Vertical Co.) and Dixiebrad-Fairchild Republic took sides in the rivalry, ultimately helping culminate in the LAB trials, which introduced multiple new multi-role aircraft that could provide air superiority and new long-range missile interception with the new threat of ICBMs in the early 60s.

ROLAND MONARCHIST V REVOLUTIONARIES, 1669[edit]

In 1669, and the years prior, a divide was taking place in the lower and higher classes of Rolandia at the time. The peasantry were simply fed up with all the minimum wage of simply 3 silver coins (3.654737 in Current Rolandia Money), which was barely enough to make a living. Meanwhile the nobility partied everyday using the peasantry's hard labor to put food on their tables and not the lower classes. In 1654, A man named Arnold Wazchetaben, a polish writer who migrated for job opportunities in Roland's capital, would write papers about a grand revolution that would topple the monarchy, and replacing it with a democratic style of government resembling the ancient Greek city state's democratic systems. Many dubbed him as "The crazy Writer", but hundreds of thousands of lower-class people thought he was simple genius. Over the next coming years, his writings sold millions of copies not just in Roland, but all over Europe. The monarchy arrested Arnold for "Mass rallying".

This caused mass unrest amongst the peasant population, and a small band of nobles came together known as "The Sons of Democracy" gather in a stable on December 12th, 1667, to write the "Revolutionary Appeal." The revolutionary appeal was a document that stated simple to free Arnold, or we'll free him himself and topple the unfair court system that imprisoned him. The monarchs obviously didn't like this, so they imposed a "Revolutionary Tax" the following week, which prohibited mass gatherings of the lower classes, and organizations supporting the peasantry. They also raised taxes by also 110% on the peasantry. The Sons of Democracy proposed to gather and rally peasants privately during the night to hold speeches against the monarchists, and how to arm themselves. This was quickly stomped out and the Sons of Democracy were imprisoned without a trial on July 1st, 1669. This soon rallied thousands of peasantry in Okhsavn that surrounded the King's palace, demanding Arnold and the Sons of Democracy freed from prison. This was also stomped out. Then finally, On December 12th, 1669, almost 30,000 peasants marched onto the Palace, armed with weapons ranging from maces to pitchforks. The small force of soldiers guarding the palace were easily overwhelmed, then thousands of Rolandian men flooded the city, which lead to the death of thousands. In the end, The entire Breminghaven Dynasty that had ruled Roland since the early 1300s was killed, 16,000 peasants died, but some estimates say this could be higher. Some peasants climbed to the top of the palace building, waving a large white quilt that said "DEATH TO THE NOBILITY, BIRTH TO DEMOCRACY!". The courts system were virtually forced to free the Sons of Democracy and Arnold, and the Sons were lifted up higher and higher in society after getting out until one of them was made president, and Arnold continued his life as a writer.

PAX REDUNIUM (1502-1545)[edit]

The beginning of Pax Redunium began at the battle of Belgrade, sometimes known as Fredrick's Cross in 1480. The battle was in a cross-section of the Danube and another major river running through upper Serbia. The ruling empire at the time, the 2nd Richian Empire, sent thousands to cross into Austria and the Holy Roman Empire in the name of conquering central Europe for themselves. At the time, Roland was a rising star in central Europe, and owned most of the Rhine and some vassal states in Bavaria and alsace-lorraine. A coalition of Roland a few other HRE states manages to push them back into northern Serbia, where a battle ensued, thousands died, but the pinnacle of the battle was the clash of Two Kings, King Phillip XI of Roland, and Fredrick XIII of Richi/Khranos. The duel went on for more than 30 minutes, while both sides chanted their leaders on. Ultimately, Fredrick lost due to Phillip's flag bearer knocking him over, and Phillip disarming him, stabbing him in the eyes. The following years, Richi collapsed into various warlord states, while Roland used the scramble for it's territory to take over large chunks of Germany and France over the coming decades. While this scramble for territory went on, a new power arose from the ashes, Khranos. Khranos was the successor state to Richi, taking over large chunks of the Balkans and Greece in just a couple years, going from a micro state to an empire encompassing millions, it became the fastest growing power in Europe, even faster that Roland itself. Over the coming decades, several clashes ensued between the great powers, but Roland eventually started to fall off in the 1530s, leading to Pax Khrathosium in 1600, where Khranos dominated all of the Balkans, Sicily, Austria, Turkey, and the Levant. This fell quicker than Roland though, only lasting around 14 years until collapsing into warlord states again.
