On September 18, 2019, a 20-year-old cadet Darwin Dormitorio of Philippine Military Academy (PMA) was brought to the hospital after complaining of stomach pain. He succumbed from the internal bleeding in the stomach cause by blunt force trauma two days later.[1] Few days later, it was confirmed by the police that Dormitorio was a victim of hazing.[2]

Circumstances and hazing[edit]

On September 10, 2019, officials said that a 20-year-old Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Cadet 4th Class Darwin Dormitorio was punished by upperclassmen for lying on someone's bed following his punishment over a missing pair of combat boots that was entrusted to him.[3] They added that Dormitorio was not able to get up on the bed because he was not feeling well, prompting the upperclassman to reportedly kicked him repeatedly.[4]

On September 18, 2019, a cadet was immediately brought to the hospital after complaining a stomach pain. However, he was only released after Dormitorio diagnosed only with urinary tract infection.[5] Dormitorio died on the same day at from internal injuries caused by blunt force trauma.[6] Before that, Dormitorio had wrote a letter to his parents about his admission to the hospital. A letter was circulated on social media, in which cadet's cousin confirmed that the letter was from, indeed, Darwin. During this time, Darwin asserted that he was fine.[7] The news of cadet's death was received by the parents lately.[8]

An investigation of Baguio police found out that a cadet sustained burns inflicted by group of cadets with a Taser equipped with a flashlight.[9][10] They also added that Dormitorio was visited by the suspects in his quarter before being beat up and tasered.[10] An affidavit stated that a Taser has a capacity of 1000kv.[10]

Aftermath[edit]

On September 21, Cagayan de Oro 2nd District Representative Rufus Rodriguez filed a resolution to investigate Dormitorio's death in the Congress.[8] On September 23, PMA officials relieved officers allegedly responsible for the hazing of Dormitorio.[11] Three dismissed cadets will be faced charges on violations of the anti-hazing law.[12] On Setember 24, PMA Superintendent Lt. Gen. Ronnie Evangelista resigned from his post following the Dormitorio's death.[13][14]

The remains of Dormitorio was brought to his home at Cagayan de Oro, where his family held a private funeral.[15]
