Knowles family (Matlock)

The Knowles family were a prominent family in the Derbyshire area of England in the 18th & 19th centuries. They were involved in lead mining, stone quarrying, railway construction and other heavy industries.

The family constructed Derwent House in Matlock, Derbyshire, in a road which was subsequently named Knowleston Place.

The family business, Knowles and Partners was involved in a lawsuit against rival mining company Dimple, over a seam of lead ore discovered during the building of the Matlock-Bakewell turnpike (the precursor of the present day A6). The case was heard on 30 October 1815 and the jury granted the mining rights to the Knowleses. An appeal heard on 20 April 1816 upheld the verdict. $ p250

John Knowles (1802-1869)[edit]

John Knowles was born 21 November 1802 in Matlock, the illegitimate son of George Knowles Sr. He began to travel considerably having become involved in the early boom of the railway industry. On 27 May 1832 he married Sarah Hassall of Whitwick, Leicestershire, in her home village. She was the daughter of Thomas Hassall of Groby. By this time he also owned property in nearby Glenfield, Leicestershire. The marriage did not produce any children. Knowles worked with Robert Stephenson in 1837-8 on the and on Brunel's London to Bristol Line from which he was dismissed on 13 October 1838. They were later recorded on the 1841 census as living back in Derbyshire in the village of Calow.^[1]

In 1857 Knowles built Knowleston Place in Matlock around the family home, Derwent House, using local gritstone. He died 5 March 1869. A stained glass window depicting the Ascension of Jesus was installed in his memory in 1882 in St. Giles' Church, Matlock.^[2]

Henry Knowles (1844-1899)[edit]

Son of Luke Knowles who was a brother to John. Donated land for Hall Leys Park. Was later the chairman of the Matlock Water Company Ltd.^[3]
