Kim Carpenter AM[1] is Artistic Director of Australian visual theatre company, Kim Carpenter's Theatre of Image[2]. He is a creator, writer, director and set and costume designer for theatre productions - mainly for his own company..

Biography[edit]

Born in Newcastle NSW Carpenter is the only child of Jim and Ailsa[3], an actress and theatre publicist. He was brought up in Newcastle and Turramurra. He was educated at Asquith Boys High School and the National Institute of Dramatic Art where he was Head of Design as well as being a member of the Board of Studies for 10 years. He studied at Motley Theatre Design Course[4] at Sadler's Wells Theatre[5] under Margaret Harris. He won a Churchill Fellowship[6] and was the winner of a Loudon Sainthill[7] scholarship. He studied visual art at [1]. He was made a Member of the Order of Australia[8][9] for his contribution to the performing arts in Australia and a Centenary of Federation Medal[10][11] for his contribution to the Sydney Centenary Parade. He was also awarded the Cameron Creswell Award for Outstanding Contribution to Design[12] - a lifetime achievement award by the Australian Production Design Guild

After graduating NIDA[13] he immediately became Resident Designer at The Old Tote Theatre Company[14] - which later morphed into Sydney Theatre Company . After returning from study in London he became Resident Designer at Melbourne Theatre Company[15] and taught theatre design at The State College of Victoria (Rusden) before joining Neil Armfield AO and John Bell (Australian actor) as a co-artistic director of Nimrod Theatre Company[16] which subsequently morphed into Belvoir (theatre company). He has won 2 Helpmann Awards[17], 3 AWGIE Awards[18], 2 Sydney Theatre Awards[19] and 2 Green Room Awards[20].

Recent work includes The Book of Everything[21] which he created with Neil Armfield for Theatre of Image and Belvoir (theatre company). The production toured Australia and enjoyed a season on Broadway theatre at The New Victory Theater[22] where The New York Post[23] named it as one of the 10 best Broadway shows of 2012.

He was Artistic Consultant to Walt Disney Company (Asia-Pacific) Guest Artist-In-Residence Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts[24] and set & costume designer for Malthouse Theatre, Melbourne, Marionette Theatre of Australia[25], Victoria State Opera, London Opera Centre, ABC (Australian TV channel), Arena Theatre, SBS (Australian TV channel), Australian Children's Television Foundation, Dancenorth, Sydney Dance Company.

As a visual artist he has exhibited at Holdsworth Galleries and Depot Gallery, Wright Hepburn Gallery.
