Isabella Christine McLennan was born in 1870 and died in 1960. She is best known for the donation upon her death of approximately $1 million to McGill University to build the McLennan Library Pavilion and its McLennan Travelling Libraries philanthropic project[1].

Biography[edit]

She is the 13th child of Hugh McLennan and Isabella Stewart. She is their 4th daughter[1] . In 1911, she helped establish the Hugh McLennan Fund for the McLennan Travelling Libraries[2]. The McLennan Travelling Libraries were founded in 1899 by Isabella's father, a project she continued for over fifty years[1]. In 1950, Isabella made a donation to the McLennan Travelling Libraries so that they could purchase a first bookmobile and again in 1956 for a second bookmobile[3]. Her travelling libraries travelled across Canada and offered books to people who did not have access to a library[3]. Isabella directly supported the activities of the travelling libraries, including paying the full salary of its first director, Ms. Elizabeth G. Hall[4].

McLennan Library Building[edit]

Following a donation totalling over $3 million[1] in partnership with funding from the Government of Québec and other private donations, the Library's McLennan Pavilion officially opened at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, June 6, 1969[5]. The will intended that Isabelle's donation be used to purchase books, but due to space constraints in the existing McGill University Library, it was decided to use the funds received from Isabelle to build a new library[1].
