She was the first Supervisor of Children's Services in the Boston Public Library, founder of the New England Round Table of Children's Librarians, and

Book Editor at the Horn Book Magazine. Coming to the Boston Public Library in 1900 as a Library Assistant, she became Children's Librarian of the Central

Children's Room in 1902 and was appointed Supervisor of Work with Children in 1917.

Early Life

A Maine native, Miss Jordan's father was a sea captain whose travels filled her childhood home with mementos and artifacts from his voyages around the world.

The Jordan siblings (two brothers and one sister) grew up in an environment where literature was appreciated and made a part of their lives. Her favorite

picture books were Hoffman's Struwelpeter and Caldecott's John Gilpin.
