The Streaky Seedeater (Serinus striolatus) is a species of finch in the Fringillidae family. It is said to be found in Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia[1], although it may be replaced by the Yellow-browed Seedeater (Serinus whytii), in Tanzania[2].
The Yellow-browed Seedeater (Serinus whytii) has been treated as a race of the Streaky Seedeater[3].
Description[edit]
14–15 centimetres (5.5–5.9 in) long. This is a large, heavily streaked, brown canary with a white (not yellow) supercilium and throat. It has a heavier bill than other seedeaters that share the same teritory[2]. One source[3] describes it has having variable greenish edges to the primaries (see photograph on left).
The western Uganda graueri race is deeper buff-brown below[3].
Status and Habitat[edit]
It is common and widespread in in the highlands of East Africa and Ethiopia from 1300-4300m, where it inhabits moorland heath, forest edge, rank vegetation, gardens and cultivation[3].
Voice[edit]
It has a rich, often fairly slow, thrush-like song as well as a loud melodic 'si-wioouu' call[3].
