About Me[edit]

I am currently a second year graduate student and researcher enrolled in the Media and Information Studies PhD program at Michigan State University. The program is a mixture of Telecommunication, Information Studies, and Media. I graduated with an MA in 2010 from the Department of Sociology and Anthropology from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. Much of my research stems from these experiences at the undergraduate and graduate level background in sociology exploring how inequality, education and social capital can be examined using online media.

This summer I spent three weeks in a Summer Doctoral Program at the Oxford Internet Institute (Oii). The program covered a wide range of Internet research topics including social network sites, social media, privacy, online social network analysis, blogs, e-government, information communication technology for development, and economics. It was a splendid program in which I learned an immense amount of information and made some great relationships with colleagues/friends from all over the world.

Previously, my work primarily focused on social network site use focusing on Facebook. Much of it involved exploring how social network analysis of egocentric networks from Facebook could be used to conceptualize social capital. I'm currently working on a paper with several colleagues on these ideas that we are planning to submit to the journal Social Networks.

I advocate for the use of R (programming language) for statistics and data analysis. Although, I have some experience with SPSS and Stata, but my preference for analysis lies with R (programming language).
