How many people have you spoken with who were directly involved in a war ? How many people have you spoken with who lived and were ruled by a dictator who thought nothing of knocking your family off to get you to talk or whatever it was they wanted you to do ? How many people have you spoken with who was a member of the Nazi party and joined whole-heartedly with free choice ? Periodically, another young German would find their paychecks had a deduction it had never had before. When asked what the deduction was, they were congratulated and told they were now a member of the Nazi party. They had no choice. It was done automatically. I think before you are judge and jury, you need to look into the lives of these brave people who risked a lot in the name of rocketry and space flight. I don't think 8 year old Wernher von Braun had being an HONORARY member of the SS in mind when he put a couple of solid fueled rockets on his wagon. He certainly had no thoughts of bombing an enemy with them. His gift from his mother at a young age had been a telescope. He pointed it towards the Moon and stars and said he wanted to go there. His dream of rockets had no funding. A military (Army) man (Walter Dornberger) sought out von Braun - not the other way around. Money was scarce. Jobs were at a premium. Inflation rose by the day. A loaf of bread cost billions ! The value of their Deutsche Mark was almost nil. Then someone comes up to you and offers you a job in a field you love. The bad catch is that it's for military purposes and you really want to do research and development of rockets to go into space - not to another country as a weapon of war.
