Social media platforms are social media sites where people and/or businesses are able to network with each other. Social media platforms have a variety of uses. People are able to connect with friends and family from all over the world. People and businesses are able to market and promote their product and/or brand, engage and interact with customers, index websites, blog, share content, and create video content.  There are MANY different social media platforms.

Social networks[edit]

Social networks are sites or applications where people can interact with one another.  They can share information and interests through sharing an article or picture and writing comments. Social networks are a way for people/businesses/brands to connect.

Facebook[edit]

Facebook is currently used by billions of people and is the leading social networking application in the world right now.  Facebook is used to interact and connect with friends and businesses through sharing posts, commenting on personal pages/brand pages, instant messages and/or direct messages.

LinkedIn[edit]

Facebook is currently used by billions of people and is the leading social networking application in the world right now.  Facebook is used to interact and connect with friends and businesses through sharing posts, commenting on personal pages/brand pages, instant messages and/or direct messages.

Bookmarking sites[edit]

Bookmarking sites are used so that people can easily store all of their favorite website links in one area.  

Pinterest[edit]

Pinterest is a site where users can save different articles, images, and videos, just to name a few, by “pinning” (saving) them to boards where users can categorize their pinned content.

We Heart It[edit]

We Heart It is an image based platform where the user can upload their favorite images and share with friends into collections. In it consists of fashion, wallpapers, celebs, and interior design. This site is ideal if you are looking for something you like or want to share with others.

Social news[edit]

Social news are sites that show news stories and articles, most based off of what the viewer would like the most.

Digg[edit]

Digg is a news site that selects specific news stories, like science, trending political topics, and viral issues for the viewer. It has a feature that allows viewers to ‘dig’ or ‘bury’ the news article.

Reddit[edit]

Reddit is an American news, rating, and discussion website. It allows registered members to add content to the site, and it is voted up or down by other users. All posts are organized by boards known as subreddits, which can be about a wide variety of topics. Things like video games, movies, music, books, and so many more are talked about.

Media Sharing[edit]

Media sharing sites let people show off images and videos with the rest of the world. YouTube is one of the most common media sharing sites.

Youtube[edit]

YouTube is an American video-sharing site that allows creators to posts videos, comment, rate other videos, and add it to their own personal folder. Videos can vary from gaming channels to the latest music video. It recently updated allowing livestreams and donations to support the creators.

Flickr[edit]

Flickr is an image and video sharing and hosting site. There is a total of 87 million members, and over 6 billion images. To access the site, you do not need to be a member. In order to post content you’d have to sign up.

Microblogging[edit]

Microblogging is exactly like regular blogging, except the blog posts are shorter and generally have limited characters to post with.

Twitter[edit]

Twitter is a online service that allows users to share sites, posts statuses (tweets), and directly message one another. Tweets are limited to 280 characters, but are able to post a chain of them if necessary. You can retweet tweets you like, along with heart them, and follow your favorite accounts.

Tumblr[edit]

Tumblr is a site that allows users to post text, pictures, videos, gifs, and even links to things outside of the site. There are over 450 million blogs, and over 550 million monthly visitors.

Blog contents and forums[edit]

Blogs are like online journals where the person/persons write their impression or feeling about something. Forums are slightly different because they are online meeting places where a question can be asked and multiple users can respond and weigh in on the topic.

WordPress[edit]

WordPress is the leading blogging platform. WordPress is used by many different businesses from corporations to small businesses to individuals. This blogging platform is free, easy to use and very user-friendly, which is why it is the number one blogging platform.

Wix[edit]

Wix is a web development site that allows blog posting. You can create a nice designed site from templates and then add your own blog.
