From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Take the X Train (X電車でいこう, X Densha de Ikou?, Take the Ghost Train) is an Japanese OVA directed by Rintarō and produced by Madhouse in 1987. It is based off the science fiction novel of the same name written by Koichi Yamano.

Plot[edit]

Toru Nishihara is an railway employee (the "East Japan Railway Company"),in the marketing department. One night, a ghost train (the "X Train") appears on the tracks, destroying everything in its path. Strangely enough, the train seems to have a mysterious relationship with Toru. Others also begin to realize this powerful link.

Influence[edit]

The FVO is from a new Koichi Yamano, who portrayed the alienation of man, a ghost train 1. We find the surreal style Rintarô had already shown Mania Mania, another work of science fiction 2.

However, the atmosphere of the anime is also deeply rooted in jazz - the title is also a reference to the music of Duke Ellington: Take the "A" Train. The soundtrack was also composed by jazz pianist Yosuke Yamashita, while the ending theme is interpreted by Akiko Yano 3. This work is emblematic of the work Rintarô (also passionate about jazz), which attempts to link the scenario and the artistic dimension into a whole expressive 4.
