Financial performance[edit]

At year-end 2009, Occidental was the fourth-largest U.S. oil and gas company measured by market capitalization, with a market capitalization of $66 billion at that date..[1] This repesented a more than ten-fold increase in the company's market capitalization since the end of 1990, when it was approximately $5 billion.[1] From 2007 through 2009, Occidental shareholder returns averaged 20.6% a year, sixth among 200 major U.S. companies in a Wall Street Journal survey.[2]
