San Marcos[edit]

Extended content
San Marcos, Texas
City
Websitewww.ci.san-marcos.tx.us

San Marcos (/sæn mɑrkəs/) is a city and county seat in the U.S. state of Texas.

According to research, San Marcos is one of the longest inhabited places on Earth.

History[edit]

Geography[edit]

Climate[edit]

Demographics[edit]

San Marcos spans areas of Hays County, Caldwell County, and Guadalupe County. It is a part of Greater Austin, and, to a lesser extent, Greater San Antonio.

Culture, recreation, and media[edit]

Among activities unique to San Marcos is the annual Just For Fun Parade, which, since 1977, has permitted all members of the general public to participate and march in the parade.[3]

The San Marcos Daily Record is San Marcos' oldest newspaper. Newstreamz San Marcos and the San Marcos Mercury are recent but popular additions. There are two radio stations currently registered in San Marcos; KBPA and KTSW. In past years, KIND Radio operated as a pirate radio station.

Parks[edit]

Sports[edit]

The San Marcos High School sports teams are known as the San Marcos Rattlers.

Texas State University's sports teams are collectively known as the Texas State Bobcats. Bobcat Stadium hosts games played by the Bobcats football team.

Economy[edit]

A number of major U.S. businesses operate corporate headquarters and large facilities in San Marcos, such as CFAN Company, Grande Communications, McCoy's Building Supply, Thermon Manufacturing Company, and Wide-Lite. Non-headquartered manufacturers include Butler Manufacturing Company, HADCO, and Texas Industries.

The San Marcos Outlet Malls are collectively one of the most visited tourist attractions in the United States. During peak seasons, the malls can triple the population of San Marcos.

Government and politics[edit]

San Marcos, in contrast to the vast majority of Texas, markedly favors Democrats in state and national elections.

Education[edit]

The Texas State University–San Marcos campus is located on a hilltop downtown and is a major driving force in the local economy and culture. It utilizes and operates many local resources. Among alumni are the 36th President of the United States, Lyndon B. Johnson, who has a museum and streets named after him, and George Strait, who endowed TSU with the Freeman Ranch.

The San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District serves San Marcos. Pupils attend San Marcos High School and Hays High School.

The San Marcos Baptist Academy is considered one of the most prestigious private schools in the Southern united states.

Gary Job Corps was opened following World War II. Its mission is to train individuals for employment.[4]

The San Marcos Treatment Center educates mentally impaired adolescents.

Infrastructure and transportation[edit]

San Marcos is connected to Kyle, Buda, Austin, New Braunfels, Selma, and San Antonio by Interstate 35.

Highway 21 connects San Marcos to Uhland, Niederwald, Mustang Ridge, Cedar Creek, and Bastrop.

Highway 80 connects San Marcos to Martindale, Fentress, and Luling.

Highway 123 connects to Redwood, Geronimo, Seguin.

Ranch Road 12 connects San Marcos with Wimberley and Woodcreek.

Farm to Market Road 1102 connects San Marcos to Gruene and Hunter

Summary[edit]

Due to regional underrepresentation amongst contributors, it's important to remember that Wikipedia's coverage of non-English topics is still in the pioneering stage—not unlike that of English topics eight or nine years ago—so additional caution should be exercised when handling red links. We'll start to see more of the blanks filled in as Internet penetration increases in the corresponding demographic, which, in the case of India, for example, has approximately doubled from about 60 to 120 million (or from 5% to 10% of the population) since just two years ago.

Deletion discussions[edit]

The notability of topics from developing countries such as China and India is often underestimated in deletion discussions. This is often due to the fact that topics are underrepresented by contributors due to language differences and low Internet penetration in the respective region. Even when articles do have significance, it's not uncommon to see an AfD nomination go something like this:

  • Delete. No reliable sources exist. Fails WP:GNG. – EasygoingEnglishman 00:16, 13 May 2024
  • Delete. No evidence of notability. – DOWNunderWONDER 00:24, 13 May 2024
  • KEEP IT IS VERY POPULAR,,,, —Preceding unsigned comment added by 59.145.31.221 (talkcontribs)
  • Delete per Englishman. Searching only yields 14 hits. – starsandstripes63 01:45, 13 May 2024
  • Delete not notable. – CanuckChuck 2:52, 13 May 2024

The problem lies in that English search results are frequently misleading on non-English topics.

Determining notability[edit]

Determining the notability of a subject that exists in little or no English literature may seem difficult or impossible at first, but with a little practice it can be done with ease.

Figure out the native name[edit]

If the article includes a native translation, start with that. If you can't ascertain the native name that way, check to see if an article exists in another language Wikipedia project.

Consider where the topic originates[edit]

Even in developing countries like India where English is relatively common, many articles are only covered by local and regional publications that exclusively use the native language. However, often a plethora of sources can be found just by searching native terms.

Interpreting search results in other languages[edit]

When you do find sources in a language that you do not understand, simply run them by Google Translate.

While this method may yield English text anywhere from shattered to nonsensical, it is usually possible to infer at least basic ideas. Textual patterns and key words can be used as clues to piece together a story.

Use reverse image searches[edit]

ph

Evaluating foreign material[edit]

Sites based in other countries may use website formats that have negative connotations in the English-speaking world. Take care not to dismiss what looks like a blog, forum or tabloid at first glance.
