Cülus is the name given to the ceremony held in front of the Babüssaade when the sultan ascended to the throne in the Ottoman State.

III. Selim's enthronement ceremony (1789)

Cülus is an Arabic word and means "to sit". It is the enthronement ceremony of the new sultan after the death or dethronement of a sultan. Cülus was the most important and magnificent ceremony held in front of Babüssade. The throne is first brought before Babüssaade. In the 2nd courtyard there are soldiers, ulema and statesmen. After the throne appears in front of the door, the sultan comes and sits on the throne in front of the door. Then, statesmen come according to their seniority, kiss the sultan's skirt and declare their loyalty to the sultan. II. With Mahmud's accession, statesmen do not kiss the sultan's skirt, but kiss a cloth placed next to him. II. With Abdulhamid, no one kisses the sultan's skirt anymore, people from near or far kiss his four fingers, touch his heart and then his forehead, and greet the sultan. During the ceremony, valide sultans or haseki sultans watch the ceremony from the justice tower. During this period, it is not appropriate for the sultan to speak during the ceremony. After the ceremony ends, the doors of Babüssaade open and the sultan enters. Thus, the person ascending to the throne officially becomes the sultan. One cannot become a sultan without this ceremony. Then, town criers go from street to street throughout the capital and inform the people that the new sultan has ascended to the throne. After the ceremony, all provinces are informed that the new sultan has ascended to the throne, and a sermon is read on behalf of the sultan during the first Friday prayer.
