Joel Fort (September 30, 1929 – August 23, 2015) was an American psychiatrist known for his activism regarding drugs and sexuality, and his expert witness testimony in high-profile legal cases.[1][2]
Early life and education[edit]
Fort was born to a Russian Jewish family in Steubenville, Ohio. His mother, Ann, was a pianist and speech therapist, and his father, Rael, worked as a podiatrist (oral history p. 3) Fort considered himself an atheist from the age of six (oral history 169).
At fifteen, Fort left home to attend Ohio State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1948 in philosophy, English and pre-medicine. (oral hist vii). He took graduate coursework in clinical psychology at the University of Chicago before returning to Ohio State to attend medical school. Fort earned his M.D. degree in 1954.
