Early life

Jayefunk is one of the most popular names in the Singapore music industry. He has been at the top of his game. Having music as his favorite childhood hobby, he began his own business by DJing at several private parties at the age of 15. His real name is Foo Jian Chuan and he produced his first album when was 16. Till today, the rockstar has performed at many global events like the Singapore Night Festival, Singapore Writers Festival, and the Starbucks Tour. With being a DJ in an X-Factor finalist group, Jayefunk’s songs have featured on many international channels like MTV, Radio and have been topping the charts on Apple Music and Spotify Viral 50 Charts.

He was previously known as ‘THE AZN SEN$ATON’ and his debut single ‘Suprememan’ was #16 on Spotify’s Singapore Viral 50 Charts. The single also aired on Beats1 Radio and featured on Apple’s The New Asia International playlist. In 2016, he bagged the National Business Award (Music) by the Singapore Review Magazine. His achievements continued when Jayefunk was seen on the covers of The Straits Times and the Huffington Posts. As far as his endorsements are concerned, the musician has represented Joshua Kane as an ambassador and was also appointed by Fujifilm as the SG50 ambassador.

In order to cope with life, Jaye thinks about death every day. The Singaporean musician takes the practice from a Bhutan tradition, though he has his own reasons for such meditation. His debut single, “TOMORROW,” embodies an optimistic gloom about his current life and all the choices that led him to today. 

Jaye fell into a spiral when he realized his life wouldn’t play out the way it was “supposed to.” As an only child in his culture, he is expected to care for his parents in their old age. At the same time, his wife’s happiness in their life together is paramount, but they knew that if they were to truly start their life together, they could no longer live with Jaye's parents. So he made the painful choice to move out.

The decision came when he penned “TOMORROW,” with tears streaming down his face and the prospect of abandoning his mother weighing heavily on him. Depression and guilt enveloped Jaye, triggering memories of his darkest moments, all of which fuel the track. It was co-written with Kyle Patrick and co-produced with him and Will Snyder and plays like a depraved carnival tune, which, in addition to the art and music video direction, draws parallels to the infamous supervillain the Joker, and the recent film directed by Todd Philips. The music video was directed and conceptualized by bless7up.

“TOMORROW” alludes to Jaye’s history with suicidal ideation. In fact, he has contemplated it so many times that he considers himself lucky to be alive. Ultimately he stopped fearing death—and everything else—which created something worse than fear: apathy. He enjoyed freedom when he was living overseas but too much of a good thing can turn sour; eventually, his heavy drinking became the only way to numb his loneliness. Looking back, though, he is hopeful. Knowing that he made it through may inspire others to hang on until they see the light.

DEJA VU

Jaye has been part of a number of projects under several aliases, spanning the globe. He began in a folk-rock duo, then fronted a funk group until he moved to the UK. His vices ran rampant as a DJ for an X-Factor finalist. Then after his return to Singapore, he earned over 1 million streams and landed on the viral charts with his comedy raps as THE AZN SEN$ATION. Now he claims the simple mononym Jaye, under which he plans to share his most complex emotions—the gleeful terror of ”TOMORROW” is just the start.

Jaye is no stranger to pain; perhaps that is why his new love song is overwhelmed by grief. His story began with self-inflicted anguish and loneliness, but recently, he has been exploring happier feelings—through agony still lurks in the shadows. On his new single, “DEJA VU,” Jaye pushes past the joy of marriage to imagine life without his wife.

A romantic ballad buoyed by string movements, “DEJA VU” picks up where Jaye's debut left off. On his previous single, “TOMORROW,” the Singaporean artist opened up about his dark past with suicidal ideation, which came to a boiling point after having to choose between caring for his aging parents and securing a life with his new spouse. The decision to move out with his wife brought him to the brink of madness, but she pulled him out and ultimately saved him.

With that realization, Jaye's love for her ballooned until it began to suffocate him, as he envisioned her death. Grief is all-consuming, and the only way Jaye thought to avoid it would be to forget his partner's memory altogether. But this was the woman who irrevocably changed his life for the better, who made him the man he is today—free and alive. Without her, the thoughts of taking his own life would surely return, conjuring the namesake phenomenon of Jaye’s new single, which was co-written with Kyle Patrick and co-produced by him and Will Snyder. For the music video, Jaye makes light of the idea of “loss,” using a time machine to search through millennia to find his love, played by his real-life partner. The video was conceptualized and directed by bless7up; the team was also responsible for the Joker homage on “TOMORROW,” which was a top trend on YouTube in southeast Asia, landed on the Top 20 Music Charts Singapore, and earned 500k views in its first month.
