John Paul Mitchell Systems is a hair cosmetic company founded in 1980 by John Paul DeJoria and Paul Mitchell.[1] It is specifically located in the United States and headquartered in Beverly Hills, California.[2] The company specializes in selling its line of hair care consumer products, which can be purchased in over 85 countries worldwide.[3] In the United States, John Paul Mitchell Systems also runs over 100 company-branded cosmetology schools across the nation.[4]

From Humble Beginnings[edit]

Born to the first hairdresser in Carnwath, Scotland, Paul Mitchell, formerly known as Cyril Mitchell at the time, was sure to proceed into his mother's career path.[5] Mitchell eventually began hairdressing school after he and his family moved from their hometown to London, England.[6] From there, he evolved as a young hairdresser from leading first-place in various hair competitions to joining a salon. Throughout his experiences, Mitchell eventually made his professional mark in New York City.[7] Paul had the opportunity to work with Vidal Sassoon and he advanced by opening the Crimpers salon in 1967.[8] In the early 1970's, a future entrepreneurial partnership was made when Paul Mitchell and John Paul DeJoria were finally introduced and befriended.[9] During this time period, DeJoria gained experience in the hair industry from selling hair care products and worked with companies such as Redken, Fermodyl Hair Care and the Institute of Trichology.[10] Earlier in his life, he had struggled with money, but having worked with these companies at different times allowed him to remain financially stable.[11] Consecutively, he was fired from each hair company throughout the 70's for similar reasons which concerned him not being the type of professional businesses wanted.[12]

The Company[edit]

In the early 80's, with only $700 altogether in their business pocket, Mitchell and DeJoria began their hair company establishment.[13] When the duo first started out, they managed to obtain an investor who was willing to own 40% of the business and contribute $500,000 to the company.[14] Although it seemed like a good plan at the time, the investor quickly bailed out and they no longer had a reasonable amount of finances to start an investment. The funds they managed to retain may have appeared impossible at first, but they were able to work with what they had. The pair diligently began sampling the hair products they developed to several salons.[15] Over the long haul, Paris Ace Beauty Supplies concurred to allocate the John Paul Mitchell Systems hair products line to consumers.[16] Following a few years of hard work, Paul Mitchell and John Paul DeJoria achieved a gross income of $1,000,000 from the company.[17] In today's hair industry, the company racks up a business income total of almost $1,000,000,000 of sales per year.[18]

Sadly, due to his battle with Cancer, Paul Mitchell passed away nine years after co-founding the company.[19] The inheritance of Mitchell's company partnership with DeJoria and their shared business endeavours are now left with his son, Angus Mitchell[20] Alongside Angus Mitchell as co-owner, John Paul DeJoria still stands as co-founder and is currently CEO of John Paul Mitchell Systems.[21]

The Original Hair Care System and Hair Products & Services[edit]

The very first John Paul Mitchell Systems products that were manufactured by the company consisted of four beauty essentials. This so-called hair care system comprised of Shampoo One®, Shampoo Two®, Hair Sculpting Lotion®, and The Conditioner®.[22] Back then, printing in black and white was far more cheaper than printing in colour. Having limited funds and budgeting, the company chose to go along with the inexpensive method, and now black and white have become iconic colours on John Paul Mitchell Systems products.[23]

Some current hair-care product lines and services include Paul Mitchell®, Tea Tree, Paul Mitchell® Pro Tools, Modern Elixirs® and professional services.[24]

Notable Awards and Achievements[edit]

In 1990, John Paul Mitchell Systems was recognized for its ethical principle against using or manipulating animals for product testing.[25] A Humanitarian award was given to the company by People Magazine.[26]
