Basil Terah Hooley (June 8 1892 - October 28 1918) was born in Risley, Derbyshire. He was the son of Terah Hooley,a successful lace manufacturer who built Springfield Mill at Sandiacre, Derbyshire and Mary Hooley of The Lodge, Risley. His sister was Teresa Hooley, the poet. He was educated at Uppingham School (1902-1907) where he joined the OTC. Pre war he was an engineer with Geo. Fletcher & Co. Derby. He was gazetted 2nd Lieutenant 4th March 1915, into 1st/7th Battalion, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment (The Robin Hood Rifles). He married Emily Thirlby on 23rd June 1915 at Risley (All Saints) Church. Went to France 24th August 1915. He was promoted temporary Lieutenant 2nd October 1915. He was one of the few officers in the 1st/7th Battalion not to become a casualty on 1st July 1916 at Gommecourt. He returned to UK on 24th August 1916 to begin training with Machine Gun Corps. He relinquished his rank of temporary Lieutenant on 26th October 1916 and was officially transferred to the Machine Gun Corps on secondment as Second Lieutenant (London Gazette 13th January 1917). Transferred to Tank Corps 30th November 1916. Appointed temporary Lieutenant on secondment to the Machine Gun Corps Infantry 1st November 1916 (London Gazette 4th July 1917). Appointed acting Captain on secondment in the Machine Gun Corps Infantry 26th May 1917 (London Gazette 4th July 1917). Appointed acting Major whilst in command of a company in Tank Corps 17th May 1918 (London Gazette 2nd August 1918)
