The Sustainable Development Goals Fund (SDG Fund) is an international development instrument based in the UNDP headquarters in New York. It was created in 2014 with a seed contribution from the government of Spain to support Sustainable Development activities through joint programmes in four regions of the world. The main objective of the SDG fund is to bring together U.N. agencies, national governments, academia, civil society and businesses to find ways in which to reduce poverty, improve nutrition and provide access to affordable water and sanitation. Areas of work and joint programmes[edit]

The Fund focuses its work on three thematic areas: inclusive economic growth for poverty alleviation; food security and nutrition and water and sanitation. In addition to this it ensures that each of its 20 joint programmes incorporate elements of these three cross-cutting themes: gender equality; sustainability and a focus on public private partnerships. Through its joint programmes the fund is supporting the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted by the United Nations general Assembly in September 2015.

The SDG Fund has joint programmes in the abovementioned thematic areas ongoing in four regions - Africa, Arab States, Asia and the Pacific and Latin America and the Caribbean- in the following countries: Bangladesh, Bolivia, Colombia, Côte d'Ivoire, Ecuador, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Fiji, Guatemala, Honduras, Mozambique, occupied Palestinian territory, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Samoa, Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Vanuatu and Vietnam.

Partners[edit]

The SDG Fund typically partners with other UN agencies to implement its programmes. It is currently working with 14 UN agencies including, UNDP, FAO, UNICEF, UN Women, WFP, ILO, PAHO/WHO, UNIDO, ITC, WHO, UNFPA, UN DESA, IFAD and UNESCO.

Financial contributors[edit]

Besides the seed contribution from the Government of Spain, numerous entities like, sovereign governments, private sector companies and other development agencies have contributed to the Fund’s corpus. In fact 56% of the Fund’s resources have come from these matching funds. To date the Fund has received contributions from- Australia, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Canada, Colombia, Côte d'Ivoire, El Salvador, European Commission, Guatemala, Honduras, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Tanzania, United Kingdom/DFID, USA/USAID and Vietnam.

Private sector partnerships[edit]

The SDG Fund has taken a que from Goal 17 of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda which talks about building partnerships for achieving the Goals and has constituted a Private Sector Advisory Group comprising BBVA Microfinance Foundation, Ebro Foods, EY Global, Ferrovial, Grupo Nutresa, H&M, Microsoft, Organizacion Ardila Lϋlle, Pvblic Foundation, SABMiller, Sahara Group, SERES Foundation and Tongwei Group.

The Advisory Group helps the Fund find practical avenues for the private sector’s involvement in implementing the SDGs through deeper UN-Private Sector engagement. To this end the SDG Fund co-authored with Harvard Kennedy School and Business Fights Poverty, a report entitled Business and the United Nations: Working together towards the Sustainable Development Goals: A Framework for Action.
