SYBO Games is an independent game development studio located in Copenhagen, Denmark. Focused on making iOS games, SYBO Games also does animation outsourcing and concept development for bigger games.[1] They have mastered developing games in Unity for iOS, but have also expanded their activities to other platforms like Android and Amazon.[2]

Knowing each other from the leading animation institution in Denmark, The Animation Workshop, Creative Director Sylvester Rishøj Jensen and CEO Bodie Jahn-Mulliner founded SYBO Games in 2010 as a consequence of winning 1st prize for best animation movie at Hamburg Animation Awards 2009.[3][4]The movie was about a young graffiti troublemaker who was running away from a railway security guard and his dog, leading the founders to create the game Subway Surfers based on the small film. Pitching the game idea for Danish Film Institute, New Danish Screen sponsored SYBO Games’ initiative for the game.[5]

Working together with Kiloo, who are known for the iOS game Frisbee Forever, SYBO Games were able to create and release the game in five months by splitting the workload with Kiloo. SYBO Games has a total of five full-time employees, with a handful of others it pulls in when "the engines starts boiling," while its partner on the project, Kiloo, is a slightly bigger studio, with a dedicated team of eight developers that work on everything from designing the menus to implementing the in-game store and social features.[6] Without the help of Kiloo, SYBO Games would not have been able to leverage the strength needed to create a fine-tuned final product.[7]

Moving forward, the highest priorities in the company are developing core game-play mechanics, concept development, cool character designs, stunning cartoony graphics and sound designs that makes your ears happy.[8] Today, the game studio continues to develop regular updates for Subway Surfers,[9][10] while also creating other games for mobile devices.

Subway Surfers[edit]

Created in Unity (game engine), Subway Surfers is about a graffiti boy escaping a grumpy security guard. The game is by far the most played game ever created in Denmark.[12]One week after the release of Subway Surfers, the freemium running game for iOS had three million downloads and was the most downloaded game in 20 countries.[13] Consequently, AppAdvice named it the Game of the Week for May 31, 2012.[14] Four months later, Subway Surfers was available to Android users and quickly spread.[15] In another month, the game made it into the top 20 growing Facebook apps by monthly active users.[16]

When Subway Surfers launched in 2012, SYBO Games praised the game for being an excellent endless runner that arguably tops even the biggest name in the genre: Temple Run. Consumers must agree as the game has been downloaded over 130 million times across iOS and Android.[17] Moving close to 10 million sessions a day, and significantly rising daily active users, Subway Surfers have reached the top 10 in basically the whole world across both iPad and iPhone. [18] The first day after the release of the game, 91 percent of users come back to play the game the next day. According to Kiloo, this is a user retention rate that's three times the industry average.[19]

Eventually, eight months after the initial release, the game landed 100 million downloads.[20] Subway Surfers' daily download rate hovers between 750,000 to one million and it's expected to rack up 250 million lifetime downloads by the end of 2013.[21]
