Meaning[edit]

Wiki Loves Africa (WLA) is an annual contest where anyone across Africa can contribute media that is relevant to their experience to Wikimedia Commons for use on Wikipedia and other project websites of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Wiki Loves Africa encourages participants to contribute media (photographs, video and audio) that illustrate the specific theme for that year. Each year the theme changes and is chosen by the community from a few universal, visually rich and culturally specific topics (for example, markets, rites of passage, festivals, public art, cuisine, natural history, urbanity, daily life, notable persons, etc).

Each year, the community from a few universal, visually and Culturally Specific topics for the year basing on African real life.

The topic of Wiki Loves Africa 2023 CLIMATE AND WEATHER.

Climate in a narrow sense is usually defined as the "average weather," or more rigorously, as the statistical description in terms of the mean and variability of relevant quantities over a period ranging from months to thousands or millions of years.

How to participate in Wiki Loves Africa[edit]

Steps[edit]

1. Take photos![edit]

This is the most important part of the competition! You can enter media (photos, video clips or audio files) that visually or sonically represent the theme of the Year Climate and Weather .

2. Select the best![edit]

Your media could go onto Wikipedia to illustrate an article. Choose photos and media where the subject matter is clear and in focus. Please do not select dozen of near identical pictures of the same topic!

3. Register on Commons[edit]

To be registered is the first thing to must think before starting the competition this will help you to enter the competition and upload a photo or any media. 4. Enter your photos![edit]

After choosing the best photos to upload relating to the topic Climate and Weather go directly to the upload page. Remember to describe the photo and add relevant categories to the image. NOTE: To be eligible for national prizes please make sure you use the dropdown in the upload wizard to select the country the image was taken in.

5. What next?[edit]

Now you are registered on Wikipedia, the the journey doesn’t stop here!! There are many things you can still do:

  • Find out more about contributing to Commons.
  • Take more amazing photos and enter them! Be sure that they are relating to this Year Topic.
  • Better describe the images or add your photos to the relevant article on the Wikipedia in your language.
  • If you see that a subject that you are passionate about is not yet on Wikipedia, then you might want to consider writing an article about that subject.

How to submit a video to Wikimedia Commons[edit]

Whilst participants mostly upload pictures, other files, such as audio and video, are welcome.
For videos, please only submit files in the following formats:

  • ogg
  • ogv
  • webm

Due to complex intellectual property rights issues, Wikimedia Commons can not accept video content that is submitted in any other format.

It is recommended by the Wiki Loves Africa team that you used an off-Wiki conversion tool, such as https://handbrake.fr/ to convert your file to either a .webm format, before uploading the video using the Upload Wizard. It is suggested that you upload video content one video at a time.

Wiki Loves Africa Competition Rules[edit]

Rule 1: All photos must be taken by the person submitting them. Unless, they are uploaded during a registered mass upload session. Your image must have your name, username or nom de plume on the uploaded file.

Rule 2: Entries will only be accepted if uploaded between the 15th February to 30th April 2023. You can enter media that was taken at any time, even historic photographs (as long as you own the copyright on these photographs or they are in the public domain), but they must be uploaded during those dates. Photographs that are already on Commons and re-uploaded are not eligible.

Rule 3: Participants must be registered on Wikimedia Commons and be contactable. Please enable e-mail on Wikimedia Commons when registering so we can contact you if your image is chosen for a prize.

Rule 4: All entries submitted to the contest must be under a free licence (or in the public domain). In most cases, the photo will automatically be licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 (CC-BY-SA 4.0). Read more about the cc-by-sa license here.

Rule 5: Images that are less than 2 mb or have watermarks or embedded signatures will not be eligible.

Rule 6: Pictures or media must be categorized under Images from Wiki Loves Africa 2023 to be eligible.



The Commons:Wiki Loves Africa 2023 contest will operate in all African countries (and beyond…) there is no barrier everyone from every where is encouraged to participate, but we make more emphasize for African.

But in some countries, local organizing teams will take charge for driving communications and social media around the competition. They will act as the spokespeople in their country, and will host upload and wiki-takes events during the competition period. In some cases, they will also organize local ceremonies for local winners. Or they will organise meetups, which are important occasions when Wikimedians (users of Wikipedia and the sister projects) come together face-to-face generally in an informal basis. Check the page if you are interested in to get a better understanding of this and want to join an event, or organize a local event. If you have attended a meetup, you can add a little report here (and link to a longer one, if you're in the mood of writing much).

Prizes[edit]

Anyone is a candidate to Win and get those amazing Prizes, Images submitted to the Wiki Loves Africa contest may win prizes!

  • 1st prize: US$1000
  • 2nd prize: US$800
  • 3rd prize: US$500

Additional categories:

  • Women who will upload many pictures: US$500

Each winner will also receive a Certificate, a pack of goodies (proposed: a hat "I edit Wikipedia from Africa", a branded battery, stickers)

In addition, all top-15 winners of the international contest will receive a hat + stickers + a certificate

The Contest timeline[edit]

Wiki Loves Africa 20223 will start on January and will be closed within one month period.

Where[edit]

Normally, Wiki Loves Africa project is run at the entire African continent level. However, every year, specific actions (training, communication etc.) are held in some countries organized by national organizers.
