The Hungerford Family Foundation, Inc. (THFFI) is a one-name, not-for-profit genealogical association regarding the Hungerford surname that is registered with the Guild of One-Name Studies.
THFFI endeavors to document a complete ancestry of every person of Hungerford descent in the world reaching back as far as the ancestors of Thomas Hungerford (an early Speaker of the House of Commons) including the associated surnames of the children and other descendants of each female Hungerford who took the surname of her spouse.
Mission[edit]
THFFI is an all volunteer, non-partisan, non-sectarian, not-for-profit public charity organized and operated exclusively for the following charitable, literary, and educational purposes:
- Maintaining an on-line database of Hungerford & associated family surnames that supplements Stanley W. Hungerford's privately published Hungerford Genealogy,[1]
- Maintaining an on-line library comprised of correspondence, manuscripts, copies of bible pages, photographs and other Hungerford-related materials,
- Maintaining an on-line database of Hungerford & associated family medical issues that are important to descendants,
- Establishing a research library, archives and museum for the preservation of original historical artifacts, manuscripts, bibles, photographs, paintings and other materials,
- Undertaking genealogical research about the spread of the Hungerford & associated families throughout the world,
- Preserving and replacing Hungerford and associated family gravestones,
- Receiving charitable contributions and bequests to provide for scholarships, and
- Undertaking educational activities about significant historic events involving Hungerfords dating back to early England, Ireland and Scotland.
The Surnames Database[edit]
The surnames database contains many tens of thousands of Hungerford & associated family surnames.
A profile for each individual contains essential information about the person, including dates and places of birth, marriage and death and even the cause of death, when available. Each profile is linked to parents, spouses and children. Each profile also is documented, sometimes extensively, by reference to source materials. Photographs of each person are included, when available.
Members of THFFI are empowered to add names to the database as well as edit its content.
The Hungerford World Tree Newsletter[edit]
]THFFI publishes a quarterly newsletter, The Hungerford World Tree that informs members about Hungerford individuals of note, describes THFFI research findings about Hungerford ancestry, and other Hungerford-related information. The newsletter emphasizes scholarly research into the early history of the Hungerfords reaching back as fat as the 12th century A.D.
The newsletter was the winner in the Family Association category of the National Genealogical Society (NGS) Family Association Newsletter Competition during the opening session of the annual conference in Grand Rapids, Michigan on May 2, 2018 after having been given honorable mention the previous year in Raleigh, North Carolina on May 10, 2017.
The On-Line Library[edit]
The on-line library contains entries for artwork, bibles, birth records, cemeteries, censuses, correspondence, death records, deeds, diaries and autograph albums, DNA results, family trees and pedigrees, financial documents, heraldry, coats of arms and family crests, lists, maps, marriage records, military, photographs, the Reverend J. E. Jackson's Hungerford research, THFFI governing documents, THFFI newsletters, and wills.
The correspondence category includes copies of the more-than-900 letters written to Stanley W. Hungerford while he was compiling his Hungerford Genealogy. [1] That trove of correspondence provides unique documentation not otherwise available to the public.
The Medical Database[edit]
The Medical Database is a database listing the medical conditions contributing to the deaths of our ancestors. Our expectation is that the development of a large pool of medical data will disclose patterns suggesting medical risks that could inform our understanding of our own health issues at sufficiently early stages that treatment intervention can improve the quality of our lives, not to mention the longevity of our presence on this earth.
Scholarships[edit]
THFFI offers scholarships to members who complete requisite application materials.
History[edit]
Richard W. Hungerford, Jr. determined that much information about Hungerford descendants had accumulated since publication of the Hungerford Genealogy. [1] The volume of that material suggested that a new edition of that book would entail several volumes if printed on paper. Given the evolution of the internet and the proliferation of on-line databases, Richard determined that the best way of supplementing Stanley's work would be to populate a database with all of Stanley's work and supplement it with information acquired since the second edition was published in 1982.
During early 2014, Richard determined that the best way of preserving all of that data would be to create an organization that could sponsor a website and make the data available on line to the public. Moreover, it was determined that members of the organization should be able to edit, as well as add to, the database.
THFFI was founded with those objectives in mind at the end of 2014 by Richard W. Hungerford, Jr., A. J. Hungerford, and Charles C. Morgan. THFFI was incorporated in the State of Florida and the Internal Revenue Service declared that THFFI qualified for tax exempt status under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of the United States, both in December 2014.
THFFI has partnered with the Wiltshire Archaeological and Natural History Society (WANHS) to digitize their vast archives of Hungerford-related material. THFFI has digitized the The Jackson Papers, the lifetime work of the Reverend John Edward Jackson, M.A., F.A.S. (1805-1891) devoted to the Hungerford family. Reverend Jackson was an English cleric, antiquary, and archivist. The Jackson Papers comprise 14 large volumes containing a very valuable collection of original documents, plans, pedigrees, portraits and drawings along with his own notes. Those 14 volumes were bound in 8 folio volumes of vellum extending to 2,594 pages plus one larger supplementary volume. Two additional volumes contain details of deeds relating to the Hungerford family. The last 3 volumes contain materials for a History of Farleigh Hungerford.
The Wiltshire Museum, owned and operated by WANHS, has placed a link on its website to the THFFI Library holdings of The Jackson Papers.
