David Pugh Evans is a figurative painter who was born in south Wales in 1942 and has lived in Edinburgh since the 1960s. His work often depicts enigmatic interior scenes, frequently in a hyperrealist style, and he has been compared to artists including Edward Hopper and Richard Estes.[1] He is an elected member of the Royal Scottish Academy (RSA) and Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (RSW).[2]

He studied at Newport College of Art from 1959 to 1962 and then at Royal College of Art, London, winning the RCA Silver Medal for Painting in 1965. He taught at Edinburgh College of Art from 1965-1968 and from 1969 until his retirement in 1998, with a year at the University of York.[2] He exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy's annual show in 1967 when his painting Diary of a Round Room was singled out for praise by The Times, whose Cordelia Oliver compared it to Francis Bacon.[3]

His solo shows include retrospectives at the Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh (1982) and Scottish Arts Club Edinburgh (2006). His work is in the collections of the Royal Scottish Academy, City of Edinburgh Council, Contemporary Art Society, Hunterian Museum, Glasgow, Kelvingrove Museum, Glasgow, Imperial College London, and Aberdeen Art Gallery.[2]
