Jannelle Rosalynne Leung (Chinese: 梁凱晴, born 19 September 1994) is a Hong Kong accountant and politician. In the 2019 Hong Kong local elections, she won the Kwun Tong District's Yuet Wah constituency, and assumed office the following year. She is also the convenor of the local group Kwun Tong Future.

Early life and career[edit]

Leung was raised in the Kwun Tong District. She graduated from St. Mary's Canossian College, and graduated from Hong Kong Polytechnic University, majored in accounting. She then began working as an accountant.[1]

Political career[edit]

In June 2019, in response to the Anti-extradition bill protests and the inadequacy of the Pro-Beijing camp-led Kwun Tong District, Leung and other residence of the district, mostly young people, founded the community group Kwun Tong Future, to work on local issues. The group started operating in July.[2]

On the morning of 8 October 2019, Leung announced she would contest in the 2019 Hong Kong local elections and run for the seat in Yuet Wah constituency as a nonpartisan candidate, against Tsui Hoi-shan, a 12-year incumbent and pro-Beijing camp member. That night, she was attacked by a man with a hard object while crossing the street. Leung also said she was harassed via Facebook and texts. She was hospitalised following the attack, but did not suffer from any major injuries.[3][4] The attack was condemned by pro-democracy camp District Councillors and candidates in the district. In the election, Leung won by receiving 54% of the votes.[5] She was one of the many pro-democracy camp candidates that won the election amid the protests.[1]

In the 2020 Hong Kong pro-democracy primaries for the Legislative Council election, Leung campaigned with Joshua Wong in the Kowloon East constituency, and was widely reported to be Wong's "plan B", though she did not confirm the reports. After Wong was disqualified from the general election, she entered the election on 27 July, but the election was postponed to 2021.[6][7]
