Augustus 'Gus' Tyler Hummel (born May 27, 1988) is an American author and screenwriter. He was nominated for an Oscar for his screen adaptation of the Tall Tale Heart and winner of the PAGE International Screenwriting Award, Stonewall Book Award, and the National Book Awards.

Early life and education[edit]

Augustus was born in Richmond, VA on May 27, 1988 to Elizabeth and Burt Hummel. His twin Kurt Hummel and he lived there for their entire lives. Reading and writing were always strong suits of Hummel's, starting from an early age. The Land of Stories is based on stories he wrote as young boy to entertain himself and his twin.After graduating Richmond High at the top of his class, Augustus was accepted to Columbia University in New York City. He studied English Literature for several months before dropping out due to reasons not stated. He never went back to receive his full degree and has been cited saying he does not regret not completing college, even if he does encourage his fans to complete their education.

Writings[edit]

Hummel's first published novel Take Your Time, was a fictional novel that described the love life of two modern starcrossed lovers published in 2010. The success of this story came when The New York Times reviewed it, putting it on a fast track for a best seller.Months later, Augustus published his second novel Dancing Through the Storm in 2011. It is a story about struggling with addiction (largely based on his real life) and has been called 'raw and heartfelt' by The Chicago Tribune. Within three weeks the story was #1 on the New York Times Bestseller list where it stayed for four consecutive months. Hummel received the National Book Award for this story.
