From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Paligo is a cloud-based Component Content Management System (CCMS) designed for technical communication. It allows technical writers to create and manage structured content at a modular level and produce a wide range of outputs from the same source content. These include HTML5 help centres and PDFs.

Used by technical writers, Paligo has many features designed for producing documentation to scale, including:

  • Modular content. Content is written in topics rather than one file.
  • Content reuse. Writers can reuse entire topics or individual elements in different publications.
  • Variables for changing product names etc. in different outputs.
  • Single sourcing. HTML5, PDF, and other formats can be produced from the same set of content.
  • Version control and branches
  • Collaboration with other users and reviewers
  • Translation management
  • Taxonomies for creating categories of content and relationships between topics.

For the content model, Paligo uses a topic-based customization of the DocBook 5.0 XML schema, which is an internationally recognized standard.

History[edit]

Paligo was created by Anders Svensson and Frank Arensmeier and their group of software engineers. Svensson had previously worked as a DITA consultant, setting up CCMS systems that would often "cost a small fortune to use and included a host of problems, (long deployment projects, steep learning curve, poor user acceptance, etc.)"[1]. Seeking a different approach, Svensson teamed up with Arensmeier to develop an affordable, easy-to-use CCMS that would solve the many problems Svensson and his colleagues had encountered. And so Paligo was born.

Although designed by former DITA consultants, Paligo CCMS uses a topic-based customization of the DocBook 5.0 standard. The decision to not use DITA was a "very conscious one"[2], as during their time as DITA consultants, they had seen many customers encounter problems with DITA's strict content model. "The topic types in DITA are very restrictive. Should you ever have something that doesn’t fit neatly, then the content model won’t even allow you to add anything else in that topic."[3]

Since its launch in 2016, Paligo has grown to become a recognised player in the technical publication tools market.
