Level 1[edit]

A topic that is actually called by the ambiguous term even if the article is titled differently. This may be because the topic is known by multiple names or that an official name isn't used per WP:COMMONNAME. These are always competitors for primacy and must always be included on DAB pages/hatnotes.

  • The city in France is a full match for Paris.
  • The article titled Gasoline is a full match for Petrol because "gasoline" and "petrol" are alternative names for the same thing.
  • The country titled Republic of Ireland is a full match for Ireland since the name of the country is "Ireland" while its description is "Republic of Ireland" however per WP:DABCONCEPT the country probably isn't a competitor for "Ireland".
  • The article titled Isle of Mull is a full match for "Mull" since some sources say that the island's actual name is just "Mull". Similarly the article titled Isle of Skye is a full match for both "Skye" and "Isle of Skye" since sources indicate that both names are the actual name of the island. For example "Isle of Skye" per the Ordnance Survey and "Skye" per Encyclopædia Britannica for example.
  • The city in North Carolina is a full match for "Raleigh" because even though WP:USPLACE specifies that most US cities should have the state included in the title per WP:COMMONNAME the state isn't part of the name, thus the city's name is simply "Raleigh".
  • The language is a full match for "English", its at English language as natural disambiguation.
  • The article titled Oven is a full match for Ovens because even though WP:PLURAL specifies that articles should usually use the singular, in the world at large topics are frequently pluralized and in the category namespace we use plurals, namely Category:Ovens.

Level 2[edit]

A topic that not formerly called by a name but is still very commonly colloquially called by a name. These are usually competitors for primacy and must be included on DAB pages/hatnotes.

  • The city titled Newcastle upon Tyne is a level 2 match for Newcastle since even though the formal name is "Newcastle upon Tyne" it is frequently called just "Newcastle" even in a generic context.
  • The person titled Adolf Hitler is a level 2 match for "Hitler" since he is frequently called just "Hitler" even in a generic context.
  • The town titled Royal Tunbridge Wells is a level 2 match for Tunbridge Wells but because the only other uses of "Tunbridge Wells" are sub topics, that title redirects to the town.

Level 3[edit]

A topic that not formerly called by a name but is still frequently colloquially called by a name. These are sometimes competitors for primacy and must generally be included on DAB pages/hatnotes.

  • The person titled George S. Patton is a level 3 match for Patton since he is still frequently known in a generic context by just "Patton".
  • The town titled Market Harborough is a level 3 match for Harborough but because the only other uses of "Harborough" are sub topics, that title redirects to the town.
  • The village titled Widecombe in the Moor is a level 3 match for Widecombe but since there's no other uses it redirects to the village anyway.

Level 4[edit]

A topic that not formerly called by a name but is still sometimes colloquially called by a name. These are usually not competitors for primacy but can be taken into account particularly if there are multiple full matches and should be included on DAB pages/hatnotes.

Level 5[edit]

A topic that has a generic name for a name. Per WP:PTM the article Great Sampford for example should only be listed at Sampford (disambiguation) but not Great (disambiguation).

  • The village titled Great Sampford is a level 5 match for "Great" but (as above) a level 4 match for "Sampford".
