2013 attack on Salaheddin Television The 2013 attack on Salaheddin Television station (23 December 2013), occurred in Tikrit, Iraq, the Salaheddin province. Five employees were killed during the attack by armed militants who invaded the complex, 8 other staff members were injured.
Description of incident[edit]
The attack began by a car explosion outside the Salaheddin TV station complex. The militants rushed inside and while suicide bombers took hostages. After several hours, the security forces killed the the gunman. Two of the bombers detonated their vests shortly before the Iraqi security forces came to reclaim the building. The exact number of assailants is unsure, due to conflicting news reports. [2]
Perpetrators[edit]
The Islamic State of Iraq and Sham (ISIS) claimed responsibility for the attack, per news reports on Al-Qaeda affiliated media forum posts.
Victims[edit]
Abdul-Nasser Sami, video editor for the Salaheddin TV station was one of the staff members killed. Other victims who died were as follows: Raad Yassin Al-Baddi, the newsroom director; Arabic language expert Ahmed Khattab Omar; Wassan Al-Azzawi, news anchor; and archives director Mohammed Abdul-Hameed. Context[edit]
Impunity is the percentage of unsolved journalist murders for each country. Violence in Iraq has reached to more than 6,650 killed, reaching a new level of brutality. Iraq has a wide-spread lack of freedom in the media.
Impact[edit]
Due to the alleged collaborations of the Iraqi journalist and the Iraqi government, their have been an increased number of murders in the last decade. Iraq is sitting with over 6,650 deaths in 2013. 100 of the deaths in the past decade being journalists who have been murdered for this reason, responsibility held to Al-Qaeda affiliate ISIS. Most of the journalists who are killed are due to the political and war contexts that they cover. [3]
Reactions[edit]
Iraq remains to be the top country in the world for impunity. According to the CPJ, authorities are doing nothing to solve any of these murders that have occurred in Iraq. [4]
Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, urges authorities to work diligently to bring the assailants to justice. Director-General expresses her desire to end the continually increasing number of violent acts against Iraq journalists. [5]
