He was murdered in CITY, Honduras.

Carlos Manual Salgado Cruz was murdered by two gunmen on October 18, 2007 just after leaving his place of business after a long day of work. He was shot multiple times which ultimately ended his life just a few minutes later (bbcnews). It is believed that two men attacked Salgado Cruz and then proceeded to flee in a car. It was never confirmed whether or not the attack was linked to Salgado Cruz’s professional career however, it is likely seen as though since there were many other attacks similar among journalists in the area (ticotimes). A man was arrested who was in connection with the murder of Salgado Cruz, as well as another incident that occurred involving journalist Giovanny Garcia (cpj). The man’s name was Almendarez Amador and was arrested in possession of the same type of gun used to murder Salgado Cruz. He was sentenced to preventative detention by the judge, however 2 years later the case was brought back up again in court and Amador was released upon the decision that his participation could no longer be verified (elheraldo).

Context[edit]

According to Salgado’s wife, he had never received any threats or had any problems regarding his work life (cpj). It is believed his death was in retaliation for the critical reporting his station did regarding corruption. The station had been harassed over their reporting over the last two years (radiolaprimerisima). The attack is believed to be completely aimed at the station (ifex). This type of event is more common in countries like this one, as compared to the United States (C-Libre).

Impact[edit]

Carlos Salgado was not only a journalist but also a comedian. He produced popular programs that were broadcast daily. Many were fond of his great sense of humor and criticism (radiolaprimerisima). He had been working with the station for a few years when this event occurred, and had already made a big impact by bringing in more stories.

Reactions[edit]

A man was arrested for this horrific crime days later, following another incident on September 7th when a fellow newscaster was shot on Tegucigalpa street (ticotimes). The shooting of these two journalists sparked a chain reaction, which led to many more deaths, all of which were broadcasted in the media (elheraldo). In May of that year, and many years to follow, thousands of people march the cities across Honduras protesting violence and the war against journalists (bbcnews).
