Walgney Assis Carvalho, (1970 – April 14, 2013), a Brazilian, was working as a freelance photographer for the Vale do Aco newspaper. He would sometimes work for the local police department by taking photos of crime scenes. He is known for being murdered in 2013. The murder was linked to another journalist and colleague of Carvaiho, Rodrigo Neto.
Career[edit]
Walgney Assis Carvalho was a freelance photographer from the state of Minas Gerais. Carvalho was murdered on April 14, 2013 at age 43.
Death[edit]
On April 14, 2013 Carvalho was shot at least three times in the back while sitting at a popular fishing hole and restaurant in Coronel Fabriciano, Brazil. He was killed a month after his colleague and friend, Rodrigo Neto. Neto worked for the same newspaper company as Carvalho and covered many police corruption stories. The two worked together on many stories. (Conde, 2019) After Neto was shot and killed on March 8th, 2013 Carvalho told many people he knew who killed Neto but would not reveal any details. Alessandro Neves Augusto was convicted and sentenced to 30 years for killing Carvalho and Rodrigo Neto. Augusto revealed that he killed Carvalho because he was worried that he would reveal that he killed Neto. (CPJ, 2019)
Convicting Augusto was a huge step in Brazil showing that people will be accountable to the murders of journalist. Since 2011 there has been at least 16 journalists killed due to stories they have released.
Context[edit]
Walgney frequently worked with Rodrigo Neto who has written many articles about the corruption in police. Neto frequently got death threats and was murdered a month before Walgney. Walgney shared with officials he knew whol killed Neto but would not give any information. This put Walgney in a dangerous situation and made him a target to the murderer. Brazil is known to be a dangerous place for reporters. Since 2011 16 journalists have been killed.
Impact[edit]
The conviction of Augusto made a huge impact on Brazil. The conviction showed that these murders of reports will not go unanswered and people will be held accountable.
Reactions[edit]
After the news of Walgney’s death broke the community was saddened. There were many assumptions that Walgney’s and Neto’s death were related. The community wanted to catch the murdered because they did not want these crimes to be unanswered like so many journalist killings are in Brazil.
