Anna Clyne (b. 1980) is a composer of acoustic and electro-acoustic music. Primarily interested in the interaction between music and other art forms, Clyne often creates works that involve visual images, film, and physical movement.[1] She was born in London, raised in the UK, and now resides in Brooklyn, NY. Notable performers and advocates of her music include Martin Scorsese, Alex Ross, Björk, ETHEL, BalletX and Esa-Pekka Salonen. In Fall 2010, Clyne along with Mason Bates will become the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's Mead Composer-in-Residence. [2]

Commissions

Clyne’s commissions include works for Carnegie Hall,[3] the Los Angeles Philharmonic,[4] and SEAMUS/ASCAP. Conductors and impresarios such as Esa-Pekka Salonen, Alan Pierson, David Gilbert, Osmo Vanska, and George Manahan have performed her compositions. Her work has been performed at venues including Carnegie Hall, Le Poisson Rouge, MoMA, and Zankel Hall.

Awards

Clyne has received the ASCAP Plus Award five years consecutively (The American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers) and was a finalist for the ASCAP Morton Gould Composer AWARD and the UK Tovey Composition Competition.[5] She won a Clutterbuck Award from the University of Edinburgh and awards from the American Music Center, The Foundation of Contemporary Arts, Meet the Composer, the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, Jerome Foundation, and the International Artist Sponsorship. She received the 2006 Commission Prize from ASCAP and SEAMUS.[6]

Education and Publisher

Clyne began her musical career studying piano as a small child, and at eleven wrote and performed her own piece for flute and piano.[7] Clyne received her BMus with Honors from Edinburgh University and a MMus from the Manhattan School of Music. Her principal teachers are Julia Wolfe, Marina Adamia, and Marjan Mozetich. Her music is published by Boosey & Hawkes.[8]

Residencies

She is resident composer at the Los Angeles-based Hysterica Dance Company.[9]
