Unterweitersdorf is a municipality in the district of Freistadt in the Austrian state of Upper Austria. It has a current population of 2059. (1 January 2016)
Geography[edit]
Unterweitersdorf is situated along the stream Kleine Gusen. It lays in the region Mühlviertel, 333m AA in between the state capital Linz and the district capital Freistadt. The dimensions from north to south and from east to west are 4.5km and 4.9km respectively. The whole area is about 11.3 km² big. 26.5% of the area is forested and 64.6% is used for agriculture.

History[edit]
Tumuli with funeral goods from the 13th to the 11th century B.C. (Bronze Age) are the oldest signs of human settlement on the municipality area[3]. Initially located in the eastern part of the Duchy of Bavaria, the area was in possession of the Duchy of Austria since the 12th century. The manor "Weitersdorf" was first mentioned in a document in the year 1200. From 1490 on the area belongs to the Principality above the Enns River. The place was occupied multiple times during the Napoleonic Wars.
Since 1918 the village belongs to the state of Upper Austria. After the Anschluss of Austria on the 13 March 1938, the village belonged to the German Reich and to the "Gau Oberdonau". The Soviet Union Unterweitersdorf and the surrounding area until 1955. Infrastructure was built and rebuilt after the Declaration of Neutrality and the subtraction of the Soviet occupation force. The village got it's connection to the A7 highway (Mühlkreis Autobahn) in the early 1980s.

Structure of population[edit]
At the time of the census in 2001 the portion of people younger than 15 and older than 60 was 21.2% and 14.6% respectively. 48.7% of the population were female. [5]
In 2001, 4.1% of the 1342 people, which were older than 15, acquired higher education (university, college, academy), 12% did their A-Levels, 51.6% did an apprenticeship and 33.3% only went to a compulsory school.[6]
Origin and language[edit]
The german dialect, which is spoken in the area around Unterweitersdorf is Central Bavarian. In 2001, 98.5% of the population of Unterweitersdorf have specified that their conversational language was german. 1.5% have spoken other languages.
The percentage of the population, which had a foreign citizenship, was at 0.9% far below the average of Upper Austria. Furthermore 0.2% had the German citizenship and 0.7% other citizenships. Overall there were 2.3% who were not born in Austria.[7]
Politics[edit]
The communal and mayoral elections take place, simultaneously with the state elections, every six years. The ÖVP always, from 1945 to 1997, obtained the majority in the local council. The second strongest party in this timespan always was the SPÖ, which then, from 1997 until now, became the strongest party. The SPÖ had an absolute majority in 2003 and 2009.[8][9]
The communal elections in 2009, which had a voter participation of 92.2%, had the following results:

The mayor of the municipality, since 19 November 2007, is Wilhelm Wurm (SPÖ). The local council consists of 19 seats.
