INTRODUCTION[edit]
Despina Gkioulis (born May 13, 2008) known professionally as Desi G is a Vancouver based singer/songwriter. Desi released her first album "On My Own" in 2020 which consisted of 8 cover songs and 1 original. In 2021 Desi G turned to songwriting and wrote her first Album "Lucid Thoughts" which was released on October 15/2021; this album consist of 14 original songs written by her and Vanessa Van Slee. In a span of a few months Desi G's spotify had over 1 millions streams.
BIOGRAPHY[edit]
Desi G went viral when a video of her performing attracted the attention of the internet on Facebook. On how social media affects her music, Desi says, “It lets me connect with a larger number of followers and connect at a level that is beyond a face to face. It’s cool because I also get to interact with other musicians and singers and collaborate which is also a lot of fun.”
Music has always been a part of Desi and is ingrained in her identity; she has had a passion for singing since she was able to string 3-4 words together. She started performing onstage when she was 6 years old at schools, local events, and festivals. She has been involved in school plays and was cast in several semi-professional plays through the Delta Youth Theater. Not stopping at just singing and acting, Desi also has tinkered with the violin, piano, guitar, ukulele, and clarinet.
Desi also raises her voice for issues such as social injustice and racial discrimination. According to her, “My music is a vehicle that allows every emotion to freely engage with the music and with those that listen and embrace my music. The biggest motivation behind my music is connection. That is connection with music, myself and with others.” She was also quick to give credit to her fans who encourage her to perform better.
As a way of giving back to the community, Desi partnered with local singers on a single to raise money to help provide lifesaving resources to front line workers in Canada. A portion of the proceeds from the single, ‘Canadian Girl Power – We Are The World," released on Dec 13/2020, was pledged to Canada Helps COVID-19 Healthcare & Hospital Fund.
